Falling Sky 2

On this day, Chicken had woken up to a fine morning, and had spent the early hours of her day trying to get herself updated on whatever was new with her neighbors.

Unfortunately, when and where there are idle hands and a mind inclined towards and desiring gossip, such a person somehow never goes too far before encountering another person with the same problem of idleness.

Perhaps it is because innately, every one of us is inclined towards wasting time if we have too much of it at hand, and too little to do with it. In any event, Chicken quickly found Duck, another almost equally notorious gossip, and they quickly fell to discussing matters that mostly did not concern them, and matters of which they knew too little about, and would as a result have been much the wiser, if they had chosen not to voice opinions steeped in gross ignorance.

There is a proverb that says that where there is a stench, flies will very soon show up. I believe the same is true with gossips. When you find two in a place, should care not be taken, more of their kind will show up, as though they had been hiding somewhere, waiting for an opportunity to come out and join in on the discussion.

As Chicken and Duck gossiped, who should come along but Mouse, another recalcitrant gossip, and one whose little size made it much easier for him to sneak into private corners and eavesdrop on the choicest bits of information. He would have been forgivable if he presented the facts as he found them, but no, if Mouse got to know that a shady person passed your house last night and merely looked in a window, you would wake up the next day to the news that an army of six-headed ogres had raided your house, killed you, and taken everything you owned.

As they continued their unholy trade, along came Guinea Fowl, one of the most uninformed people on the planet, who unfortunately could not be bothered about his ignorance. He joined them, and they spun long and foolish tales until the sun was high in the sky. Having wasted a good portion of the day, each went their separate ways.

Chicken, for her part, took the time to quickly nap underneath a great tree, being a very jobless individual. While she slept, an unripe fruit on the tree fell, having been dislodged by wind, to land on Chicken’s head.

With a scream, Chicken was already awake and running at top speed. For in her foolishness, she thought a piece of the sky had fallen on her head.

To be continued...
