Tuesday Dinner

Melita is an incredible cook. Today, she’s prepared a pumpkin soup, its bright colour contrasted by the garnishing of chopped chives.

She lays two hot meals on the table, sits in her chair waiting for her husband to come home from work.

It’s been fourteen years since he last worked.

So much excitement delivered in a single closing line. :)

it's all in the endings :3

Nice. What an occasion. Well delivered.

Hmmm! Interesting. I love the imagery. Now I'm wondering whether he goes off to work, and she doesn't know he doesn't actually work, or if perhaps she is demented in some way and can't face the truth!

That's the beauty of short-stories, there's an ending but also much for the reader to assume. I specifically put a large number so that it's more plausible that he had either retired (or got ill/passed away) a long time ago, so that it's more likely that it's the protagonist's dementia rather than any recent event.
