Day 5 - What is your favorite drama film?

Answer: Fight Club (1999)

I guess I'm going to have to break the first and second rule here because I'm going to talk about Fight Club. I'm not going to spoil anything about the film for anyone who hasn't had the pleasure of seeing it. I would be doing the film a huge disservice if I went into detail about where this film goes. So, I'll keep things brief and simple here. Edward Norton plays the nameless Narrator that works as an automobile recall specialist suffering from a severe case of insomnia. He wants excitement in his otherwise dull existence. He meets Tyler Durden by chance on a plane flight during a business trip and things get a little more interesting from there. Self destructive shenanigans ensue.

Fight Club is another one of those movie where everything seems to just work. The casting is perfect. Edward Norton nails the Narrator looking for something to spice up the monotony of his life. Brad Pitt turns out another great performance as the charming bad boy Tyler Durden who flips the Narrator's world upside down. Helena Bonham Carter's take on Marla Singer is right in her wheel house. It is one of those films that a dozen different people could watch it and you might get a dozen different interpretations on what the film means. Thought provoking, I suppose some would call it. Again, I don't want to say too much about the film because it deserves to be seen without spoilers for those who haven't seen it.

Fight Club is based on a novel of the same name by author Chuck Palahniuk. If you want to know how good this movie actually is, the author himself has gone on record to say that it actually improves on his original story. That's really saying something. It's not often when an author will admit a film adaptation surpasses it's source material. I've read the novel myself. It's a fun read. I kind of agree with him though. The movie does an excellent job adapting it and kind of does a better job at telling the story. I strongly recommend checking out both the novel and the movie, if you haven't already.
