Day 9 - What film do you practically know the whole script to?

Answer: Stephen King's IT (1990)

This is another day challenge where I could pick several different films that would fit the bill. In favor of trying not to retread anything I've already chosen for other days, I'm going to go with the television miniseries of Stephen King's IT. I might be cheating by picking a miniseries over a normal movie, but I wanted to pick something that I could quote most of the script from memory. I don't know how many times I've seen IT, but so many of the scenes here have been burned into my memory. That can mostly be credited to the character of Pennywise the Clown. I have an absolute love of the evil clown trope and Tim Curry's performance keeps me coming back to this movie time and time again.

Detailing the plot of IT is kind of hard to describe. I'll try to do it without giving away too many spoilers. Our focus is in the fictional town of Derry, Maine where Stephen King loves to set a lot of his novels. There are children who go missing and horrible acts of violence that take place about every 30 years. In 1960, the younger brother of a kid named Bill goes missing and he is determined to find out what happened. There seems to be this bizarre clown that keeps popping up and tormenting Bill and his friends. This clown doesn't appear to be human because it doesn't abide by the laws of nature. It's some kind of monster. The kids have a confrontation with the clown and defeat it. However, 30 years later, kids start going missing again in 1990. Bill and his friends had made a pact that if the clown ever came back, they would return to Derry, Maine and finish the job. That's exactly what they end up having to do.

Unlike my choice for Day 8, IT is a Stephen King adaptation that hasn't really aged all that well. The acting isn't great. There is so much melodrama that oozes out of practically every scene. It is saying something when the child actors are actually kind of better than the adult actors. This film would probably have been forgotten about and lost to obscurity if it weren't for the fact that Tim Curry steals the show as Pennywise the Clown. That's the one thing that most people can agree about when it comes to this film. Tim Curry's portrayal of the villain here is amazing. He really sells the role because he's actually kind of great at being a clown in general. That's probably why I can remember so many of the lines from this film. Every time Pennywise is on screen, it's a great scene. It's just kind of a shame that IT doesn't hold up very well by today's standards. I guess that's why we got that remake from last year.
