First Mainstream Adoption of Crypto in Film

I may be terribly mistaken that this is actually the first integration of cryptocurrency in a Hollywood film (that isn’t a documentary) but it’s the first one I’ve seen that makes a point to address it as part of the main narrative. It even goes so far as to use it during the short trailer before release. If you haven’t gotten the YouTube commercial yet, here it is, timestamped at the moment when crypto is showcased-

At first, Superfly seems to be an uninspiring gangster story set in Atlanta that weaves together a fiction about the ultra-rich controlling the city and flexing their way through the world. And when crypto was first mentioned, my psyche assumed that it was being used to color a world of crime and shady dealings. But this inclusion seems to not only use crypto in the forefront, relying on a more positive use-case of blockchain for the protagonist’s Robinhood-type scenario.

I don’t think this movie will hold a candle up to John Wick or other big-money shooters with the dark vibe but I’ll be sure to skim through this on Netflix once it’s off the big screen. I’m particularly curious how they’ll actually utilized crypto in this story and how it manifests in the everyday use by the main characters and city as a whole.

I’m also relieved film is taking up the mantle to incorporate blockchain tech and culture without the hyperbolic Bitcoin documentaries we’ve seen in the last several years. I discussed on a recent stream of Blockchain & Bourbon that mainstream entertainment is one of the main vehicles to leverage towards broader education and acceptance. General audiences still don’t understand the baseline use-cases of cryptocurrency and hopefully movies like this will illustrate some facets clearly.
