Suburbicon (Film): Review.

in #film5 years ago

Suburbicon generated a lot of expectation in me, supposedly written by the Coen brothers, directed by Clooney and starring Julianne Moore and Matt Damon, it had to be something great, however, all that experience and all that talent was useless. The movie was a disappointment, with very few truly good things.

Plot

A story set during the fifties in a very particular neighborhood, Suburbicon, a faithful representation of the American dream, but behind all that appearance is hidden exactly the opposite, crime, death and racism.

Opinion

At the end of the 1950s, in a supposedly idyllic neighborhood called Suburbicon, Gardner Lodge lives with his paraplegic wife, Rose, his son, Nicky, and his sister-in-law Margaret, and in one night, two thieves enter the house and tie each member of the family to later sedate them with chloroform, killing Rose from an overdose. Then Margaret decides to move into the house to help Gardner, however, everything gets complicated, when Bud Cooper, an insurance agent, decides to pay a visit to the house and investigate what happened before Gardner gets his wife's insurance money.

I must say that I am a little disappointed with the film, which has a huge problem when deciding which story to relate, it is not defined between being a comedy or a thriller, and the combination it makes between one thing and the other is disjointed and insufficient. The director does not know whether to try to narrate the social situation of a historical period, centrally the issue of racism, which he highlights in a very caricatured way, whether to talk about appearances or definitely about a crime. Everything could have been mixed making a very complete film, but it's not like that. The film switch from one thing to the other, making the script try to cover many topics, but everything is inorganic, mainly related to racism, as if it were something that they tried to introduce by force in the film without taking time to think what it really brings to the story that is being narrated.

I liked the visual aesthetics of the film, although it has its shortcomings, for the rest, the direction work done by Clooney was not good. The script, as I said, fails, and does it in a big way. The only thing that seems really remarkable about the film are the performances, all very well made and truly convincing.

I expected much more, however, it did not meet my expectations, the film had everything to make it a very entertaining story, but they squandered it by not focusing on the truly important and by starting to play with the script in the most absurd way.

Score

5/10

I really do not recommend it, it does not contribute anything except some good interpretations, just for that reason I do not totally condemn it. If you want you can see it, but at your own risk.
