Plot

One of Marvel's most complex and popular characters takes center stage when Eddie Brock becomes the host of the alien symbiote known as Venom. As a journalist, Eddie has spent time trying to unmask the creator of the Life Foundation, the famous scientific genius Carlton Drake, an obsession that has ruined his career and his relationship with his girlfriend, Anne. When investigating one of Drake's experiments, the alien entity Venom merges with Eddie's body, and the reporter suddenly acquires new and incredible superpowers, as well as the opportunity to do practically whatever he pleases. Twisted, dark, unpredictable and driven by anger, Venom forces Eddie to fight to control some extremely dangerous skills that, at the same time, are also intoxicating and make him feel powerful. Opinion

In the film we follow Eddie Brock, a reporter with a casual attitude, a lone wolf who travels the streets on his motorcycle in search of truth and justice. However, as a result of a rather foolish action he committed, his world falls apart and nothing makes sense to him anymore.

At that time the movie should start to get faster, but it actually takes about 20 more minutes to do it, because we need to see Brock much more miserable, really sunk. Although the film takes time to present its characters, these seem to be developed from a first sketch. Do we really need almost 30 minutes to delve into what motivates Tom Hardy and the villain Riz Ahmed?

On the other hand, Tom Hardy does not disappoint as Eddie Brock, a character interested in justice and truth, but without the need to make new friends. And when it comes to joining Venom in his body, a funny mix between these two characters is achieved through accurate dialogues that provoke a genuine laugh in the viewer. Tom Hardy is enjoying being Venom on screen and that is palpable. Michelle Williams, on the other hand, only generates a question: What are you doing here? His character contributes very little to the plot and never develops a real chemistry with Tom Hardy. One would think that an actress of her caliber could do much more for this movie.

Many say that because the film does not have a classification for adults, the character loses much of its essence. We have examples of successful films based on comics with this classification, such as Logan or Deadpool, but that more than having blood and wholesale vulgarity, it was their scripts and direction that were the fundamental elements of their success. Failures in Venom are not due entirely to their classification. Many of his stumbles are also due to a script that looks like a sketch of what the final script should be. The action sequences are exciting, but do not stand out as memorable in the film.

To say that the film is a disaster is also exaggerated, because although it is true that the character promised much more, usually people tend to magnify everything when it comes to superhero movies. Also, the address of Ruben Fleischer leaves much to be desired if we compare it with his previous works.

Venom leaves the way open for more adventures of the symbiote in our world. But first we must define some key points about the direction the franchise will take: will the predominant genre be humor, terror or action? And once that is defined: what classification should it have?
