Insomniac Film Festival #59: 47 Ronin
47 Ronin is a fascinating film and I’m not sure why. I do not get the impression that it is a good film but it is fascinating in its failure.
Set in an ancient, mythical Japan, 47 Ronin stars Keanu Reeves as Kai, a “half-breed” raised by Lord Asano of Ako. During a tournament, Asano is the victim of a bewitching and sentenced to commit seppuku. His samurai are banished, their leader, Oishi, imprisoned, and Kai is sold into slavery.
A year later, Oishi is freed. He reassembles his samurai, now ronin, frees Kai and they embark on a mission to avenge their master.
The film is beautiful to look at, with some interesting, if bewildering, special effects. Some of the action set pieces are quite impressive but I was at a loss about the whole enterprise somehow. It just doesn’t quite work. I don’t know if this is based on Japanese mythology or just a random story.
Ultimately, it fascinates. Which is a good thing I guess. So, I don’t know if it’s bad or good. Worth watching for that reason I think.
