Foxcatcher: not what you expect from Steve Carell

in #films6 years ago (edited)

Once again, walking into this film I knew absolutely nothing about it other than the cast. I had assumed that since Carell was in it that it was going to be another blockbuster comedy, but as you likely know, that is not what this movie is at all.

The film begins with Mark Shultz - played by Channing Tatum - giving a lukewarm pep talk to a group of kids at an elementary school. He is paid a very small amount of money for this and then is seen getting takeaway burgers at a fast-food restaurant. It becomes evident very early in the film that Mark Shultz, who is an Olympic gold-medalist, isn't exactly reaping financial rewards from his achievements in sport.

Things start to turn around for Mark when he is contacted by John du Pont, an extremely wealthy wrestling enthusiast who invites Mark to fly to his estate in Pennsylvania. Upon arrival, John du Pont (played by Steve Carell) offers Mark a job to help with his private wrestling team named "Foxcatcher." This offer is extended to Mark's brother, Dave as well. It becomes evident very early on that Mr. Dupont actually wanted Dave as a trainer more than Mark and this creates animosity because Mark feels overshadowed by Dave already anyway.

They build a successful team and the performance of their camp is actually looking good. However, it becomes evident that John desperately wants the Foxcatcher team to view him as a teacher and mentor, despite the fact that his money is the only real contribution to the team. In a tournament where Mr du Pont is actually competing, Mark witnesses a bunch of money being handed to du Pont's competitors in order to ensure his victories. John also introduces Mark to cocaine, which he starts to use on a regular basis. They have an odd friendship, and it is almost as though John du Pont owns Mark rather than is actually friends with him.

Mark's brother Dave eventually joins Foxcatcher team as well, and this is where things start to get tense. This is because Dave (played by the excellent Mark Ruffalo) isn't enamored with John du Pont's wealth, nor does he pretend to believe that John is a mentor, actually telling John at times to kind of "get out of the way" so he can properly train the Foxcatcher team. Obviously this doesn't sit well with Mr du Pont.

So the main reason I liked this film is the fact that when you think of a cast that will be nominated for awards in a drama category, Steve Carell and Channing Tatum aren't exactly the names that come to mind. I think that might be a big part of the reason why they were chosen. Seeing Carell do any work that isn't silly comedies (which I love, don't get me wrong) was actually very surprising because as it turns out, he is excellent at serious drama scenes also. I look forward to seeing Steve in serious roles in the future because he proved with this film that he is not a "one trick pony."

I also really enjoyed the fact that this movie is based on a real story - and that always makes for good cinema in my mind. The only downside of this film in my opinion is that it is a bit boring. However, the culmination of events at the end (which i will not spoil) are so surprising that I can't believe that I had never heard about them seeing as how i was alive when they actually occurred.

This trailer actually does a wonderful job of enticing you to watch the full movie.

Foxcatcher tells the fateful story of John Du Pont and the Olympic winning Schultz brothers. Directed by Bennett Miller, Foxcatcher taps into the psychology behind Du Pont, examining his psyche in the most disturbing of fashions. Steve Carrel delivers a performance that many will find hard to swallow. He is dry, he is awkward, and he is completely insane. To keep it simple, Steve Carrel is absolutely terrific and truly shows his range as an actor. The other half to Carrel's Du Pont is Channing Tatum as Mark Schultz. Tatum completely drowns into his character, leading him to turn in a vicious, unapologetic performance that is so perfectly executed that you will soon forget that this is Channing Tatum. When he is on screen, he is Mark Schultz. The voice of reason for both Mark and Du Pont lies in Dave Schultz, played brilliantly by Mark Ruffalo. Dave serves as this mediator in between Mark and Du Pont especially when their relationship starts becoming more and more intense and violent. The rest of the cast featuring Vannessa Redgrave and Anthony Michael Hall also turn in very sound and great performances as well. As far as acting is concerned, Foxcatcher is a hard film to beat. Every actor is on top of their game here and it really shows how good of a director Bennet Miller is. He takes a seemingly dry script and turns it into an emotional roller-coaster by way of his actors. One scene in particular haunted me involving a simple glare from Tatum's Mark Schultz as he peddles faster and harder upon seeing Du Pont. That scene on paper isn't that interesting but with Miller's uncanny ability to make even the simplest scenes intricate and layered, it works and remains one of the more memorable scenes from the film. The other highlight from this film has to be the cinematography. Everything is filmed with a slight tint of dread and gray, it creates the mood immediately and balances the story perfectly. Overall, Foxcatcher is a great character study featuring top notch performances.

I heard the interpretation of Carrell and the others in this movie is extraordinary, I've heard only good things from this film although I haven't seen it. I really don't like dark or disturbing movies hahahaha

Oh i have only heard about it already long time ago, might be worth actually checking out

Let me begin by saying the script writers Frye and Futterman for Fox Catcher did amazingly well, if not for anything, Carell wasn't a comedian in this regard, i must be honest here i don't really fancy real story movies but they limit the imagination and creativity of authors and producers, fox catcher has its twist revolving around love, trust, jealousy and anger issues, the relationship between Max and Tatum is just enough to keep you going on, in all Fox Catcher is a great movie, if you haven't watched it yet id say take a peek lets know your thoughts.

I think the fact that it was based on a true storyline made it kinda boring (as you rightly observed)

Hiii... Gooddream

I give You my 100% upvote for this amazing post.

Superb trailer and i think movie too...
Thanks for the sharing this trailer

Pretty nice story Nd plot this movie has. Sensational. Steve carrel playing John du pont has a main and interesting role. Making the film challenging. Without his presence it would've been just normal. Mark and Dave playing brothers act great too. The video is nice. I will just watch it.

no other word for you @gooddream, keep the spirit and success always, I always support you, good post.

Lol, when i read the title and came across Carell i said in my head, here comes another comedy of Carell, lemme see what this one is about but then i started reading and it turns out, i had it all wrong, that's a very eerie relationship you described between those two and i really want to know how the twist ended, the trailer did a good job at arousing my curiousity
