Kandahar (film): top 100 of all time??? really?

in #films5 years ago

This is not my opinion but rather the combined opine of various news outlets including Time magazine. I can say that I disagree entirely. While this move may be original and a real eye-opener about an otherwise not-at-all-understood country, it is not good.

First of all, the story is only partly true and if had actually been live-action the horrible acting could almost be forgiven, but it is not live action, it is a script based on real events and it goes like this: Nafas (Nelofer Pazira) travels first to Iran and then illegally to Taliban controlled Afganistan in order to visit her sister who has written her of her intentions to commit suicide.

Her journey takes many twists and turns including being abandoned by her guide once and then needing to abandon her second guide because he can not be trusted. Along the way she encounters many people with various limbs missing. Legs for those that stepped on landmines and hands / arms for people who were convicted of crimes.

The movie paints a pretty dismal picture of what a country turns into once religious extremists get a hold of it and refuse to let go, especially towards women.

The movie, while perhaps doing a great portrayal of the horrible conditions that some people had to endure under the rule of the Taliban, doesn't have much of a story and the acting (particularly by the people speaking English) is some of the worst I have ever seen in any film ever.

I can understand why people would sing this movie's praises for actually filming in hostile territory including filming in Afghanistan illegally and the fact that is shows the suffering of the children at the hands of their parents, but aside from that I feel as though this film is just extremely boring.

I can't rate this film highly because as you might be aware, I rate films almost entirely from an entertainment point of view - and this film has very little of that. I will give a few points for showing the extremes of Afghanistan and the hardships the people of it face (presuming the film has some truth to it.)

It is hard to watch such movies. There is a moment in the film that absorbs so much emotional power that it can easily become the main symbol of the "apocalypse of our days". This is when in one of the scenes above the crowd of legless cripples from the "Red Cross" helicopters they drop wooden legs on parachutes, like manna from heaven, then this very run of cripples of disabled people, rushing to race for artificial prostheses.
It turns out that these legless grasshoppers, jumping on crutches, are driven by a quite pragmatic goal, to snip off the legs not only for themselves, but also as a reserve, for relatives who are still healthy and unharmed, but can lose limbs at any time. Mine in this land is buried so much that enough for the second half of the population, the one that is not crippled.
Such Afghanistan will seem to someone to be a country of the doomed, to others, on the contrary, to some kind of a fictional and magical land, an almost mystical image of a completely different world, and even some other planet whose inhabitants do not know what death is. In addition, everything that happens around is just a natural expression of different forms of life.

Well.. since I trust your opinion, I’m not watching this crap. Thanks for taking one for the team! The sacrifice you made here (watching such sub par crap) And then briefing us on it, is such a true “Friendship” Move. Thanks!!

The politically correct Crap started from hollywood. It is now wrong to call a horrible movie as such because it originates from a certain place

Great. I love watching films a lot especially action movies but actually I did not know the ranking of movies in the top 100. This will be my time of hearing the name of this film. Actually some films are rated based in some different standard and reason best to to them. But I guess you also may be correct also
