Hello Dear Steemit Friends ! My choice for today in the series '' To Honor Old Masters '' is Hans Thoma – German painter who achieved outstanding popularity in the late 19C and early 20C. The formative influences on his art were Manet and the Barbizon School. In his early landscapes combines Thoma intense realism with an echo of romantic storytelling. For this reason he has been called the “Father of Stimmungslandschaft”.

Hans Thoma painted also peasant scenes, still lifes and portraits. In his later work, which includes frescoes, oils, watercolours, lithographs and engravings – the romantic element is dominant. Thoma painted mythological landscapes, fairy stories, idylls and Wagnerian themes, and it was this later manner that made him the most popular painter in Germany.

Thoma studied at the Karlsruhe Academy, moving later to Düsseldorf, Frankfurt and Paris. He had his first highly successful exhibition in Munich in 1890 and was a member of a Munich Secession. In 1899 Thoma was appointed director of the Karlsruhe Academy, which now houses the largest collection of his work. During the following years he was showered with honours and there were repeated exhibitions of his work throughout Germany.
