Intro:

Kayla’s boots hit the ground. The dry earth scattered into dust clouds as she strode across the front of the house. Manny was late again.

The harsh sun beat down against her brown skin. She looked off into the distance, the heat haze sat above the plain, rippling the sight of the far off mountains.

She lifted her arm, checking her watch. The sun reflected across the scratched screen. She ran her finger over the deepest scratch. It had still worked after her accident.

A young boy came hurtling out of the front door and blindly ran straight into her. The force knocked them both to the ground.

She fell hard. Her limbs scraped against loose stones and the scorched dirt.

“What in the devil are you playing at?”

She got up quickly, patting herself off in the process.

The young boy sat still. Tears rolling down his dirty cheeks. He coughed as he struggled to breathe, the fine dust getting into his lungs.

Manny stepped onto the veranda and placed his hands on his hips. His shirt hung open and his hat tilted on his head.

Kayla shook her head at the sight of him. She had known Manny her entire life but she was always surprised to see him so relaxed at his home.

“This your boy Manny?”

“Aye, that be Thomas.”

“He make yer’ late then?”

Manny walked down the front steps and helped his son up. Thomas took the offered hand reluctantly.

Kayla chuckled to herself.

“Better bring him with us. ‘Bout time he learned the family trade.”

Manny and Thomas followed Kalya towards her truck. The truck smelled of licorice and sawdust. The engine rattled into life. Thomas slid into the centre. His eyes still pooling with tears.

Manny opened up a hip flask, taking a sip. He growled as the harsh liquid hit his throat. He passed it to Kayla, she drank as she drove across the open land.

“What them tears about then?”

She asked as she passed the flask back.

Manny laughed. “He got a clip round the ear for talking cheek to his mother, didn’t ya’ boy?”

Kayla gripped the wheel tighter as the truck bounced over the rough terrain.

“Well, that seems rightly deserved then. Ya’ don’t talk like that to your ma kid, ya’ just don’t.”

The truck swayed as the tires followed the grooves and tracks of the land. Thomas was the most affected by the force, having spent very little time in vehicles of any kind. He watched as the truck traveled through a river, unaffected by the water.

Manny lit up a cigarette and tilted his head back as he exhaled. The smoke filled the air quickly, Thomas started coughing.

“Quit it will ya manny. The kid got weak lungs or summit’?”

“He’s a weaklin’ alright.”

Manny laughed as he clapped his son on the back.

My Entry:

“Ya know, if I had a kid I bet he’d be a little tougher, I reckon,” said Kayla.

“If ya had a kid? Kayla, you’re too tough to have a kid,” said Manny still smoking his cigarette.

“Why don ya have any kid?” Asked Thomas as the vehicle left the cool refreshing water of the river to once again traverse the barren landscape toward the family trade.

“It can be a long story, or I can tell it to ya straight? Whichever ya prefer laddie?” Kayla asked with a smirk looking at the rock Earth.

“Better tell it straight yeah,” answered Manny throwing the cigarette out the window.

Thomas’s eyes looked first at Manny, and then at Kayla, as he awaiting the conclusion.

“Love ya Pa, only he can leave ya Ma because of you Thomas. So sad isn’t it? Just imagine, if ya won around true love could find a home in this here wasteland,” said Kayla.

“So sad true,” said Manny looking out the window to the far away clouds casting shadows on the dunes.

“Both of ya love each other? Only ya can be together cause a me? Ma know bout this? Is news to me,” said Thomas with tears welling up in his eyes.

“Yes she knows Thomas me boy,” Manny stated apologetically.

“The whole country knows Thomas,” Kayla said laughing. “If only ya died or something.”

“What!” Thomas yelled bursting into sobs.

“Take it easy boy, jus trying to toughen ya up,” Manny said slapping Thomas on the head.

“Yeah, jus a joke ya little wee buddy. Lighten up, I don like ya Pa cause I’m a lesbian,” laughed Kayla.

“Yeah, Kayla likes other women,” Manny said winking at Kayla over Thomas, and they both chuckled.

The comment did the trick, and Thomas stopped wailing like a banshee. He now sniffed snot with tears in his eyes trying to smile as if this were all a joke.

“Almost there yeah little baby, man up,” demanded Kayla with both hands on the wheel, the large truck continuing to plow through the wind swept dirt path.

At that moment, Thomas could see the 50 meter tall electric fence spanning between enormous steel poles every 100 meters. This massive fence 1,000 meters across in the open landscape of barren rocks and dirt.

“What’s that Pa?” Thomas asked with the tingling feeling of fate.

“That’s the Velociraptor enclosure son,” Manny answered in a dignified tone.

“We’ve got to feed em,” Kayla chimed in.

“Yes, fraid the works dangerous. That’s why we keep em on this side of the river way out here,” said Manny.

Thomas said nothing as the truck lumbered through swirling dust clouds toward the family trade.

At the house, there remained a VHS tape of Jurassic Park from a time long ago. Thomas didn’t know that men had actually brought back dinosaurs, and that it ended civilization.

Wow that was a surprise ending. I was not expecting it at all.
I like the way you kept up the conversation, it made the job reveal have a bigger shock value.

Thanks. Noticed the dialect and wanted to keep it going. Makes it fun and adds a challenge. Not to mention a good laugh.

I like this. Pretty cool how you gave the character voices and played with diction. Good read.

An unexpected and original ending. I also liked the naturalness and the rough style of the dialogues. It's always a pleasure to read your stories!

Interesting ... could this be the next 12 starts to Jurassic Park? Oh! The tension. lol

Ha ha, we're taking over the franchise on Steemit!

Ahhh love the surprise twist at the end, never saw that coming!

Thanks. Enjoy hearing your feedback.

FYI, my new ebook Steemit Blog: Contests will be entered in The Wishing Shelf Book Awards. It's administered by UK Best Selling author Billy Bob Buttons.

They are Kindle writers mostly and hope to get them interested in what we are doing on Steemit.

I dunno, I cringed reading all those man-ups despite them being basically a reflection of southerners. I must note that I have met various southerners (and of course people who still say this) but I get mixed results on "man-up" - some still say it, others bother not. Makes me feel sorry for the kid, especially when they feel so threatened by a kid simply tearing up that they spout out the line. Of course, good natured but still a damaging line in my head (feels a bit ironic from the lesbian Kayla, then again this may be a portrayal of Second-wave Feminists that were Lebian Feminists).

Eh, didn't derail my enjoyment but made me cringe at the sight of those gendered comments. I mean, have they ever seen a farmer's/worker's girl in Eastern Europe before? They'll learn more than "man-up" in a few days than it takes for Tommy to accept the "man-up" message. Eh, but the dinosaur thing was pretty fucking sweet and would've loved it even more that when they said "man-up" that a dinosaur comes up and bashes into the truck which makes them all freak out.

Upvot'd-n-resteem'd.
