Friday Fishing: Offshore Fishing

One kind of fishing that I enjoy is offshore deep sea fishing. The big fish are often not close by, so to get them, you often need to go on a trek and do some searching to find the schools of fish.

I was lucky enough to join a cousin for a deep sea trip on a mid-size sport fishing boat, which they often call a “six-pack” as the ideal number of anglers is about 6. On this trip, we went about 30 miles offshore and fished an underwater bank. We found three main species of fish – Yellowfin Tuna, Yellowtail and Bonita. The fishing was great, and we caught a lot of them (I pulled them out of the ice box for this picture):

Trips like this are fun but can be hit or miss. You can catch a ton or you can catch nothing at all – it just depends on if you can find them and if they are biting. The trips are fairly expensive too, as the boat eats gas at a very fast rate, and you do a lot of boat driving and trolling. But if you are lucky enough to be out there on an epic day, it is an experience you will not soon forget.
