Friday Fishing Stories: Caught the Wrong Thing

in #fishing6 years ago

You never know what can happen when you go fishing – as long as you are giving it a shot, strange things can happen.

A while back, I somehow convinced Kristine (she was my girlfriend at the time, but is now my now wife) to join me for some bass fishing one afternoon and we hit a local pond to see if there was anything biting. This particular pond had a lot of weeds around it, so wildlife also likes hanging around there.

I picked up some nightcrawler worms to ensure we caught a few fish, as bass love the worms and can be harder to catch with artificial lures. Of course, this meant I had to put the worm on Kristine’s hook, as she found it too gross.

Once I rigged her up, she cast the worm out and then started talking about the cute turtle she saw. Well, that turtle saw the cute worm she was fishing with as well. Her reaction was not quick enough, as she let the turtle eat the worm and hook… oops! She proceeded to catch the turtle, but I was able to unhook it fairly quickly and the turtle was unharmed! Oh, and we did manage to catch some bass as well… Here are a few pictures:

Of course, my greatest catch in this story is my wife ;)

I have, unfortunately, caught a few other of the incorrect species before. While ocean fishing with live anchovies, I once had a seagull swoop down and eat my anchovy (it was supposed to be going deep to the fish, but instead was swimming near the surface) so I had to reel in and unhook the bird, which of course was trying to fly away – it was quite a scene! (bird was OK!)

Have you accidentally caught something other than a fish before?

Appreciate you being here!

Brian

I once caught a duck. No one wins when you catch a duck on your fishing line...

Wow! the turtle looks amazing. Have a nice experience sir @brian.rrr. I always like your fishing and really you have caught a beautiful fish. Thanks a lot for sharing your beautiful fishing monents with us.

You must do a lot of fishing. lol I've caught a lot of seaweed before. I might have caught more seaweed than fish. lol
Great story and great pics.

I can't say that I've caught a turtle before while fishing, but I have caught a few logs. Sometimes a tree, or even a friend. (Ok, I've never hooked a friend while fishing, but you know they wouldn't let me hear the end of it if I had.)

You should ask him about hooking a friend... his brother to be exact 😂

Ha ha ha, @brian.rrr care to elaborate? I think we'd all love to hear the story. :D

I'm curious to hear if he floundered. If you hooked him in the face, I hope he was a steelhead. Was he being a largemouth (b)ass? Do you yell, "I caught a tuna (tonna) fish?"

Ok, I'll stop. :P

Ha! Well, when I was younger, about 9 years old, I did hook my 7 year old brother in the head with a sideways cast 😱 our dad couldn’t get the hook out after 20 mins of trying to wiggle it out, so we had to go to the ER to have it removed. They gave the hook to him in a sealed jar and he has kept it ever since... now he can remind me of my errant cast for life! 😬

Ha ha ha, that's such a great story! Well, now it is. I'm sure it was decently traumatic at the time. Hopefully it didn't hurt him too much. I could imagine him wanting to hang onto it. That's perfect ammo any time he does something wrong. He can just come back with "yeah, well you hooked me in the side of the head!"

Oh, I'm so glad someone told me to ask. ;)

Ya I have caught snapping turtles by accident sometimes

Remembering is living! And more pleasant when the memories include the woman she loves. I imagine that the more you remember what your wife did, her gestures or her attitude than the turtle itself.

Very happy to see both of you are enjoying catching fish, this is the first time i saw your wife who is so pretty and beautiful, really nice couple. Lovely fishing story, i liked more this sentence your greatest catch in this story your wife. All the photographs awesome, specially your last three photographs that really great. Best wishes both of you and thanks to share your catching story.

Hello how are you? you love your family very much and that is to be admired, you have a very beautiful family
This fishing story on Friday I like why you saved the turtle and you speak very well of your wife
I am very grateful for the support

I have totally been there with the seagull thing. We used to fish off the rocks all the time when I was still living back home in Nova Scotia. The rocks were pretty high up in some spots and the gulls would swoop in and try to grab the fish as you pulled it up. Kida funny to have one on your line and trying to fly away. Once when we were fishing for cod we pulled up a Sculpin. What an ugly fish.
