January 25–27 – The Great Blizzard of 1978 strikes the Ohio Valley and the Great Lakes, causing 51 deaths in Ohio.
Last year started off with Snow in Miami, this year (1978) Blizzard Of 78. Still people want to keep talking about "Global Warming and Climate Change". They had to add in the "Climate Change" because people were starting to look at the history of weather.

February 1 – Hollywood film director Roman Polanski flees to France to avoid sentencing after pleading guilty to unlawful sex with a minor.
Any real change since then? Yep there has been change since then. Now they don't runaway to France, they just make excuses and buy lawyers and pay off people and families. Hollyweird has been sick for a long time, there is nothing new about pizzagates or child porn or human trafficking, it has been happening and will continue to happen until the laws are enforced, until people are put into jail.

February 5–7 – The Northeastern United States blizzard of 1978 hits the New England region and the New York metropolitan area, killing about 100 and causing over US$520 million in damage.

Yes people it is weather again. Whether you like it or not weather is going to do what it does. There is no conspiracy from Mother Nature. People will no matter how much it is shown that weather happened in the past are always going to be surprise at it, and have to come up with a reason for it. So Global Warming, caused by man not nature. Oh-kay.

February 16 - The first computer bulletin board system (CBBS) is created in Chicago.(https://www.chinet.com/)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CBBS
It would be several years before I found BBS, one of my favorite things to do on them was to play Trade Wars, and a few other text type games. The story here was a pretty good read, and chinet forum is still operating today.

April 2 – The CBS soap opera Dallas is launched. It is set to be aired later this year in several countries, including the United Kingdom by the BBC.
This was a pretty big evening soap opera. Per wiki "The 1980 episode "Who Done It" remains the second highest rated prime-time telecast ever." It was a pretty big show and had a lot of talk going on about it around the water coolers at work.

June 16 – The musical film Grease is released, starring 24-year-old New Jersey born actor John Travolta and 29-year-old British-Australian actress and singer Olivia Newton-John.
It was an okay movie for its time. I watched it, kind of a modern updated remake of West Side Story. For awhile it altered music, and what was "popular" during its run.

August 2 – President Jimmy Carter declares an unprecedented state emergency and evacuation immediately following the revelation that Niagara Falls, New York neighborhood Love Canal was built on a toxic waste dump.
Quite simply, Love Canal is one of the most appalling environmental tragedies in American history.

But that's not the most disturbing fact.

What is worse is that it cannot be regarded as an isolated event. It could happen again--anywhere in this country--unless we move expeditiously to prevent it.

Is it safe today in the area, or not. https://www.pbs.org/newshour/show/residents-say-love-canal-chemicals-continue-to-make-them-sick is a current PBS show: Residents say Love Canal chemicals continue to make them sick

I chose not to watch it. I did a quick look through some of the transcript.

October 14 – United States President Jimmy Carter signs a bill into law which allows home brewing of beer in the United States.
And thus the home brew industry took off. I have tried to make beer a couple of times, some was okay, some was not, but as a young person it was fun to do, that is until you all of a sudden just a seconds inattention, have malt and hops and your brewing ingredients bubbling all over your stove and leaving a sticky sticky mess to clean up.

November 18 – Mass murder/suicide of 909 Americans in Jonestown, Guyana under the direction of Jim Jones.
I really do not have much to say about this, it was a tragedy, a group of people trying a new life, and then this. They were not stupid people just ordinary people from all different walks of life, looking for something different a different way to live.

Music

Theses were from: source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Billboard_Hot_100_number-one_singles_of_1978. It was a different year of music compared to 1977. I enjoyed the music of 1977 top 100 more than 1978. Not much on the list of 100 that really caught my eye as standout music to what I enjoyed. There were a lot of really good albums released but most of the music was overshadowed by the disco sound.

Conclusion

1978, not a year musically I am very fond of, at least not in the top 100. But if you look to albums released, there were some very good ones. The history, I don't know if it is because of all the climate talk popping up again and the Paris Climate accords or what, but really weather happens. We can all bury our heads in the sand and ignore the truth of weather and let the politicians and special interest groups have their way or we can point out the history. There is was a little thing in modern history called the Little Ice age. There is was a thing in History called the Dust Bowl.
I am not sure why the ATF is still known as the ATF. The Alcohol issues were all pretty much passed off to the state governments. People are allowed to brew at home, (not just beer). But like anything in government once it is there it takes an act of congress to make any changes and well...we have all seen how well congress works. In the past 25 years how many times has congress had the budget ready to go on time?

Well til next week. Sorry no cars again. Maybe next week.

Sort:

I remember a picture from my parent's photo album that shows their Datsun buried in a mountain of snow. That was probably 1978. We moved the year after.

Jimmy Carter might have been unsuited for the Presidency, but he certainly did the right thing by legalizing homebrewing. My father in law planted a vineyard that very year.
