Wildflower series - Bankrupt bush
Seriphium plumosum is called the bankrupt bush because it is commonly found in overgrazed land. When livestock have degraded grassland, this plant survives because it is inedible and very drought resistant. It is a heather-like shrub that contains volatile oils that prevent it from being eaten but for that reason, it is also a very dangerous plant to have too much of in grasslands as it is very flammable. It isn't used medicinally, although it often used for making outdoor mattresses as it has very small branches and retains its springiness.
Although it usually looked on with horror by farmers and smallholders, I have always been a fan of the delicate grey bush with little fluffy flowers. It doesn't grow on the hill where I live although it is common elsewhere. I found it growing on Swartkops and it is common in farmland. This is what the bush looks like.
yea this stuff i never really liked from day one, they are always difficult to get of ones clothes..but pretty informative. thanks for sharing
Yes, they are rather prickly
thanks for sharing
I find all flowers fascinating.
Me too
Wow, really unusual. I have never seen this before.
It belongs to the heather family of plants. I see you get heathers in Aus, too. This one is considered an ugly sister, due to its invasiveness in pastureland
Interesting how some plants manage to "scrape out a living" in the most inhospitable places. Reminds me a little of some of the scrubby things that grew in Texas when we lived there... although those were all extremely thorny/spiny and would definitely NOT be used as mattress filling!
=^..^=
I have seen pictures of Texas scrub and it is definitely not comfortable. There's an ecological niche for every plant although this one can easily become an invasive pest
Beautiful pictures!
Interesting and pretty "thorns!"
In my opinion there are no ugly plants and flowers.
There is are simply unusual and strange.
Exactly
:-)
God bless you. @biblegateway
