Altamaha-ha: North American Folklore

in #folklore5 years ago

It seems that many legendary monsters tend to be sea monsters. As we fear the unknown depths of dark waters, our imagination can spark the tales of monsters.

Altamaha-ha is a legendary creature that plays a part in the folklore of the Southern U.S. state Georgia. Named after the river in which it is said to inhabit, Altamaha-ha is also affectionately known as Altie.

Altamaha-ha is said to have a body similar to a sturgeon, but much, much larger. The coloring of this sea creature is said to range from grey to green, with a yellow underbelly. His snout resembles that of a crocodile, and he is equipped only with front flippers, no hind legs.

In March of 2018, a decomposing carcass of a sea creature washed up on the shores of Georgia, looking much like a small mythological creature. Although identified by some scientist as potentially a shark body, many Georgia residents believed it to be the legendary Altamaha-ha.

I like this series you're doing with those fantastic animals from American folklore. Many of them perhaps exist or existed, or just belong to the legends of an entire nation. Although I must say that the image of the animal they got in the sea does look like an Altamaha-ha! Very interesting. Thank you for sharing, @pinkspectre

That's amazing, From where do you get all these legends.

These types of sea creatures do tend to be relatively common in folk lore. Interestingly I've heard that when otters swim in packs they can sometimes look like one long sea creature which may explain how some of these stories come about. They are fun nonetheless
