Ozark Howler: North American Mythology
Not quite a fearsome critter, as the Ozark Howler has roots far beyond the lumbermen of the 19th century, but certainly fearsome in it's own way. The Howler is described as being the size of a large bear but with short stocky legs , horns like that of a ram, and canine like features. Allegedly found in the Ozark range of the United States (Oklahoma, Missouri, and Arkansas), people of this region put a lot of stock in the existence of this cryptid that is not seen with other North American mythological creatures.
The specific and dreadful cry of the creature is how the Howler got its name. Legend has it that the loud howl of the beast sounds like the combination of an elk's call and a wolf's howl. Aside from it's wild howl, the Ozark Howler is distinguished from other regional animals of the forest by it's eyes, which glow a continual red.
The beast is also sometimes also known as the Black Howler, because of it's shaggy coat of black fur. While not many people of the Ozarks have seen the creature, many who have stepped into the woods, claim to have heard its terrifying howl.

I can totally imagine how people come up with a creature like this. You're camping in the woods and wake up to hear a strange unfamiliar noise in the in the distance. Everything is scary in the dark and at 3 am anything is possible. You immediately imagine the most ferocious beast large, with a black shaggy coat and red eyes. A legend is born lol.

My friends and I were convinced that a bigfoot was after us when we went camping one time as teenagers... what ever was making that sound, it was creepy as hell!
