The Health Benefits of Switching To Drinking Gin

in #food5 years ago

Having a drink has long been seen as a vice, and in many culutres and parts ot the world it is very much frowned upon. The call for libations is often associated with overindulgence, which is not a blanket rule mind you.

Everyone has their reasons for taking a drink, some use it to unwind, some enjoy the taste, others use it as social protocal or simply to have a good time. Whatever you're reason for alcohol consumption it will always be seen as a guilty pleasure due to its negative effects it can have on a healthy body.  The effects of drinking alcohol are notably weight gain, liver issues, dehydration, bloating and a whole lot more.

It's not all bad news

Recent studies have shown, however, that Gin isn't your average spirit and has some surprising health benefits that drinkers may not have known about.

The secret to Gins ability to beneficial to the human body is in its ingredients, which some have labelled super berries.

So what exactly can gin do for you that other spirits cant? Check out our list of why drinking gin, in moderation, could have some surprising health benefits.

1. Gin contains fewer calories than other spirits

You don't need to worry too much about your waistline. According to Livestrong, gin is one of the least calorific spirits with 97 calories per shot.

The juniper berries come into action by increasing the number of enzymes that break down your food and helping your digestion. This also means less bloating. Mixing it with tonic will add more calories, so keep it neat.

2. Gin helps with digestion

Juniper berries used to make gin helps increase the number of enzymes used to break down food, helping with digestion.

3. Drinking gin also means less bloating

If you're having issues with bloating, or urinary tract infections, gin may be able to help. Since juniper is a diuretic, it increases urine output and therefore stops water retention. In the case of UTIs, increased urine output often flushes out toxins and bacteria associated with the infection.

4. Gin helps with those suffering from arthritis

In addition to its host of other benefits, juniper was a traditional remedy for the pain of conditions like arthritis and rheumatism. Of course, a daily Bombay Sapphire isn’t a substitute for proper medication, but there are those who insist that gin-soaked raisins can reduce inflammation

5. It's good for your bones.

Gin's makeup helps to relieve achy joints and gout, and its alcohol content coupled with the juniper berries can be an effective treatment for chronic pain and inflammations, such as arthritis. Gin-soaked raisins are especially good to prepare as you can store them in a jar and eat them daily to see the benefits.

6. It can help fight off coughs

The oils contained in juniper berries can alleviate coughs by expelling the mucus in the throat and aiding lung congestion. The great thing about gin is that it can be mixed with many different herbs and ingredients such as ginger, which will help to soothe a sore throat.

7. Gin was used as a pain killer

In the Middle Ages, gin was used for medicinal purposes… although we suspect that in the pre-painkiller era it might have just taken the edge off!

8. Juniper berries are super berries.

The word "gin" actually derives from the older English word genever and the Latin word for juniper, Juniperus. Gin is the most natural spirit as its main ingredient is, of course, juniper berries. These super berries are jam-packed with infection-fighting qualities as they are warming, stimulating and disinfecting.

9. G&T also helps keep mosquitoes at bay

The quinine in the tonic water is a deterrent to mosquitoes. Gin is added to the water to make the drink taste better.

10. Gin is great for your skin

More antioxidants mean fewer wrinkles so here's your chance to switch up your anti-wrinkle cream for a drink of Bombay Sapphire. Juniper berries are full of antioxidants and boost the regenerating cells in your body for smoother, healthier looking skin.

11. It can help with hay fever

It might not be the most obvious hay fever remedy, but according to Asthma UK, switching to gin in the summer months could help to soothe your coughs and sneezes. The theory is that drinks like beer and cider have a higher histamine content due to their fermentation process, often making hay fever symptoms worse, so opting for clear spirits like gin instead can, in a roundabout way, curb them. Okay, so it’s not a magic cure for hay fever, but every little helps…

12. It's also the best drink for diabetics

Research published in the Journal of Diabetes Nursing in 2008 looked into the safest drinks for people with type 1 diabetes to consume, and guess what?

They found that gin and tonic came out on top. Of course, you should always consult with a medical professional if you are diabetic and concerned about your alcohol consumption, but it might be handy to bring that little nugget along to your appointment, no?

13. Gin fights cancer

The high antioxidant levels in gin help to “ neutralise free radicals in the body,” which are some roots of cancer. These same kinds of benefits are found in fad drinks like kombucha, but wouldn’t you rather skip the ‘bunch and get tipsy?

14. It can help you live longer

The juniper berries contain flavonoids which are great for preventing heart disease and improving your blood circulation as you get older. Although, of course, excessive drinking could have the opposite effect.

Gin is not a tonic for everything

I am by no means endorsing the self-administration of gin instead of the usual medications I just thought it this list would make for a great bar fun fact list.

None Gin drinkers beware, this list could become your next worse enemy as gin drinkers will continue to spread the word of gin to all they meet at every social function or through their  social media post.

Drinking alcohol doesn't have to be 100% vice so order up a G&T and cheers to good health.  The most important part of drinking gin is to have fun, know your limits and drink responsibly, as with any alcoholic beverage.

A little gin doesn’t have to be seen as a sin 🙂

I couldn’t imagine drinking gin straight lol it’s harsh in a way other booze isn’t.
I think I heard an old guy once say never drink gin it ruins your teeth, because he did and lost them all lol not sure how true that is.

Been a while since I’ve drank gin but I did like a GT though I don’t know if I particularly liked Bombay. There was another English brand I liked but the name escapes me.

Lol I’m not much of a gin drinker either and never would I have it straight!

I wouldn’t go out of my way to drink it but if someone is offering I’ll take a glass

Gosh there are so many gin brands in South Africa alone I can’t even think what could be available in other counties
