On Food Expedition in Leuven, Belgium

in #food6 years ago

Last Sunday, me and Jeanine went to a local food fair in my home town of Leuven, Belgium. This food fair is basically a showcase for local restaurants to present their best dishes, at cheaper prices and smaller portion sizes. For us it's a really great way to try out new restaurants, while not having to spend a ton of money.

In Dutch, this event is called 'Hapje-Tapje', which basically translates to 'Food-Drinks'. Since we're in Belgium, there were also many different Belgian beers to try. I stuck with very light beer, just had two Stella pilsners since it was blazing hot that day. Personally, I don't really enjoy drinking high ABV beers when it's around 33°C.

There was an American tourist who clearly had a bit too much to drink. He literally couldn't walk in a straight line anymore and was walking around in circles - before somewhat softly falling on the street. Of course I didn't take any pictures of that, shit happens and I wouldn't want anyone to record me if I had a bit too much to drink. If you're used to drinking light beer, even the standard Belgian pilsner has quite a kick at 5,2% ABV.

We very much enjoyed all the food while we were there. I had already posted a few pictures of the snails and steamed pork buns, but we tried some other dishes as well.

These mussels for examples were some of the best I've eaten in a while, they were prepared with a delicious white wine sauce. Aside from that, we also tried some fried squid balls and another steamed pork bun from a different place. For drink we had a very great non-alcoholic cocktail made from tea.

At the end of the day, we didn't spend too much money. A lot of these dishes were priced at 2 - 5 euros, so we could easily try many different ones. I think we stayed for just under 2 hours, since the heat was getting to us in the end.

This is certainly an event that I would recommend for people who want to try Belgian cuisine. It takes place every year in the beginning of August, in Leuven, Belgium. Just be careful with those heavy Belgian beers, so you don't end up as that one American tourist!

Trying out different food from all kind of festivals it's a great way to find out more about some other cultures but also to see what food you actually enjoy and what don't. :)

I like these food festivals bringing you flavours from all over the world!

This game is very fun. https://reurl.cc/9EGMj

It is looking delicious and fun to be there. And for what I know, Leuven is also a city where cosiness is around every corner ... Maybe next year. Looks you and Jeanine had a good time ...

Those darned light weight Americans! I don't know why they even let them out of their own country :) Looks like you guys had a great time and got to try a nice variety of stuff. I always like going festivals like this. They used to have a rib festival near where I live and even though you would think you might get tired of ribs at every booth, you really didn't!

Looks like a nice place to drop in for a weekend with the family! I will try and time it with a food festival, seeing as Dutch food is.....

That sounds like a great time and looks like some tasty food. Thanks for sharing pics and some of the experience! Looks like a pretty amazing town to tour around in as well!!

lovely report, I always like these kind of things myself too, especially when the prices are ok (but most of the times they aren't unfortunately lol)
