The satisfaction cake...Familiar, comfortable and predictable

in #food6 years ago

The basic human reaction to pleasure is not satisfaction, but rather craving for more. Hence, no matter what we achieve, it only increases our craving, not our satisfaction - Yuval Noah Harari

This cake has lead me to give in to temptation many times...Not this exact cake over and over, but ones like it. This one only led me to temptation on one occasion, and then I ate it. It was pleasurable and yet left me craving more...

This is a vanilla slice from a famous little bakery in the Barossa Valley town of Lyndoch. Lyndoch Bakery. It is situated not far from my home town so I was a frequent visitor as a kid (when mum and dad could afford it) and have tried most of their cakes and pies over the years. Like the Yuval Noah Harari quote above states cakes like this could never satisfy one's desire for them, only increase the craving and I for one crave them a lot.

When we have out of town visitors we typically head to the Barossa Valley which is only about 40 minutes from where we live now to do some wine tasting and gourmet food eating and invariably end up at the Lyndoch Bakery for coffee and, of course, some cake. The last time I was there was not with friends but with family, my dad actually.

Some of you who have followed my blog may know my dad suffers dementia and is in a nursing home making it very difficult to take him out, especially as he gets worse and worse. My memory of taking him to the Lyndoch Bakery and a drive in the Barossa Valley is going to be the last I have unfortunately as he rarely leaves the nursing home now. We stopped in at the bakery that day of course, had coffee and some cake and then took a short stroll around. Good memories and one's I'll recall fondly.

I'll go back to the bakery again of course, I simply can't resist it, and my wife and I have been known to head out there just to visit the bakery and to bring some goodies home. Each time I go back memories come flooding in; Of me as a kid being taken there by my parents, taking my wife there for the first time (got her hooked immediately), of good times shared with visiting friends from interstate and of course with my family every so often when they visit from wherever in the world they happen to be. I don't think I'll get sick of it; The views are lovely, the air fresh and clean and of course their cakes, breads and pies are some of the best around.

This bakery is one of those places that I feel comfortable, welcome and very relaxed. It's not just about the cakes though, it's about a deep satisfaction I feel knowing that I can go there and get the same feeling each time. It's familiar, comfortable and predictable.

I really want to eat that piece of cake/pie in the photo. Of course I see this right after I finish eating a nice gooey breakfast burrito that I made after dropping off my son at daycare.. mmmm

You forgot to add #foodporn .. this is NSFD .. Not Safe For Dieting! =P

I love going to places that give me the "home-y" feeling where I'm comfortable and, for lack of a better phrase, feel at peace with myself and my surroundings. That feeling doesn't often come to me in public places, but nostalgia does strike very often when I return to my hometown to pick up some of the best NY-Style Pizza or NY-Style "Water" Bagels. Taste and Scent are very strong senses, especially when it comes to memory recall. I'm sure it has something to do with human evolution and innately knowing to avoid certain scents because they indicate danger and go towards other scents because they indicate fresh food .. but it's more fun to think about the fun stuff!

Side note: I still haven't found a better bagel, or slice of pizza for that matter, than the ones I could get in my home town ... and I've tried really hard to find them!

NY-Style Pizza or NY-Style "Water" Bagels

I'm sitting here at 10:25pm on Friday night and you mention this! Now I want some. :)

Well, pizza is a perfect "fourth meal", or any meal for that matter! :)

Bagels... I eat them at any time of day, but most people stick with Breakfast or Lunch for those

Great, now I'm hungy :/ You know, it wouldn't be quite so bad if it wasn't 1 AM here...oh well, there goes my silhouette.
You know, you will return to Europe one day, @galenkp, and I will hunt you down and stuff you with cake. And I'd be worried if I were you, because by then, I'll probably be huge at this rate :P

Haha, now THAT'S something to look forward to! To be honest I don't actually eat a lot of cake. I'm diabetic although I dabble with it here and there. :) Maybe thats why I think about cake all the time?

The only place like that for me so far is home..

everytime you mention your father I get a bit sad and think of my own.

but that cake does look amazing.

Yeah, I know. The emotions of others can spark our own I guess.

My mum makes vanilla slices. Has done for decades, it's her signature dessert.
I was sick of them for a few years, but I'm coming back around :)

Mmm, love vanilla slices!

Seriously, you need to back off with the cake stuff cause I want to bake. Your dad's situation is so sad for me mate , but I'm glad you at least have some fond memories to cling to. The idea of that vanilla slice looks amazing and I really want some.

Get your ass here mate, I'll buy ya a coffee and vanilla slice from the Lyndoch Bakery.

In my native country this cake is called a thousand leaves. I would like you to take a look at my last publication, maybe you will find out about realities that you do not know
