Venezuelan Meatballs Recipe (Bollos Pelones)
Introduction
Hi everyone! Today I want to share a Venezuela recipe. “Bollos pelones” are delicious ground beef meatballs covered in “arepa” dough (Corn meal) and served with a savory tomato sauce. The recipe consists in four steps: (1) Sauce; (2) Ground beef (Filling); (3) Dough and (4) Assemble the meatballs.
Ingredients
Step 2: Filling
Ingredients
* ½ Pound ground beef
* 2 Cloves of garlic crushed
* ¼ Cup red pepper
*6 "Ajíes dulces" (Sweet pepper, Venezuelan Variety)
* ½ White onion
* 1/2 Teaspoon tomato paste
* 8 red tomatoes cut into small pieces
* ¼ Cup green olives chopped
* 2 Tablespoons capers
Directions
Heat oil in a pan, cook crushed garlic, red pepper, "ají dulce" and onion. Add ground beef, followed by species like black or white pepper, marjoram, etc . Once the meat is cooked, add tomatoes, olives, capers, and tomato paste, lower the temperature, cover and let the sauce thicken.
You can use another kind of meat like pork, chicken or a mixture, even you can use a bit of bacon. If you are vegetarian, you can use soy meat, or prepare the stew with zucchini, eggplant, carrot. Keep in mind that you can try new things and adapt this recipe.

* 2½ Cups chicken broth (optional)
* 1 Tablespoon vegetable oil
* Salt to taste
Directions
To prepare the dough, the chicken broth should be warm (you can use only warm water). place the broth in a medium bowl and slowly mix in flour. Mix with a spoon and once the dough has a similar texture to cookie dough, add one tablespoon of oil and knead with your hands.
Directions
* Make a ball of dough and open a hole in the center, fill it with the ground beef, close it with more dough, making sure it maintains a round shape.
* Repeat with all the meat and dough until you have used up all the ground beef.
* Bring water to a boil in a deep pot, add meat balls carefully. Let them cook until they float, which means they are ready. Remove them carefully, drain and let them rest for 5 minutes before serving.
* Place all meat balls in a serving platter and serve with sauce over them. Enjoy with white rice or just by themselves. You can put cheese or eat with plantain.
