Species of Mangoes

in #food6 years ago

Previously, we talked about mangoes and reasons why we need to take them often, we'll go further today.

Mangoes are very delicious and juicy tropical fruits which belongs to the family of (Mangifera genus.). They are quite commonly known for their juicy nature and their distinctive yellow flesh. Mangoes have more than a thousand varieties worldwide, and this is becauses of the different ways they are being cultivated. Also, along with variety, the size and shape of mangoes are very different from each other as well. There are big ones and there are smaller ones. some are a bit more spherical than the others. Today, we would be taking a look at some of these varieties of mangoes. Let's dive in!.

  • The Sheri Mango

The first one I have here is the Sheri mango, which is also known as cherie, sherry or cherry. Most people are of the belief that the Sheri mango might be exactly the same thing as the Alphonso found in India, that is famous for being sent alongside gifts for kings and royalties, and love letters between loved ones. The Sheri mango has the shape of an ellipse. It also has a green epicarp with a fleshy orange or dark-yellow endocarp. It is as well famous for its spicy rich taste which leaves an aftermath taste of turpentine. This mango can be harvested around February.

  • The Keitt mango

Next on the list is the keitt variety of mangoes, which is a choice for many due to it's very sweet and fruity flavour. With a medium green or dark green skin, they are firm and also they have an extremely juicy flesh with less fibers. Keitt mangoes are usually harvested during the period of June through to September, and found in countries such as the United States and Mexico. One way the Keitt mango is identified is by its natural blush it has on one side of the skin when it's ripe. Also, since it is disease-resistant in nature, it doesn't perish easily and is commonly shipped to other parts of the world.

  • The Haiti mango

The Haiti Mango is a bit large in size and it has the shape of a kidney. They are quite common and enjoyed for their sweet spicy flavour and their superbly smooth and tender edible flesh. Its skin covering is usually light green, but most at times, it tends to change into a more yellowish form when it gets ripe. Ever heard of the desert mango, well the Haiti mango was always used in the desert thus the name "desert mango" and is usually harvested during the period of September through to October.

  • The Haden mango

Just like the Keitt variety of mangoes, the Haden mango thrives in temperate and hot regions of the world, say; Florida (which it considered to be where it originated), Ecuador, Peru and Mexico. Again, just like the others, the Haden mango is very common because of its sweet and rich flavour, and its distinctive golden-yellow skin which has a crimson red blush. This variety of mangoes have an ovate shape with its firmness ranging from medium to thick.

  • The Alphonso mango

This Alphonso mango is arguably the best there is when flavour and taste is brought up as a discussion topic for mangoes. It has a mild flavour and an oblong-shaped feature and appearance. This Alphonso mango is believed to have been originally grown and harvested in India before it spread to other parts of the world. Also, apart from the Alphonso mango variety being difficult to cultivate, getting it can be a bit of trouble because it's rare to find, partly due to it's extremely short harvest season between March and May every year.

  • The Valencia Pride mango

Last on the list but definitely not the least is the Valencia pride variety of mangoes. For starts, they're easily identifiable with their extremely large, long and fibreless appearance. The Valencia pride is commonly harvested between the months of July through to august in the southern parts of Florida. It has tangy sweet taste and a pink or red colour with yellow patches in bits and pieces, also, it's flesh has a very strong and desirable odor as well. The valencia pride variety of mango are usually planted using a dooryard planting technique.

There you go people, a list of some of the varieties of Mangoes, its a long list but i could just come up with these for now, but If you know of any other variety, and possibly with pictures feel free to share in the comment box below.
