Cheat Muffins With A Twist And Added Sticky Fingers (With A Few Sprinkles Of Dog Hair)

in #food6 years ago

This recipe is brought to you by @sweetpea with starring guest: Kid Noah (aka Sticky Fingers) and is courtesy of Sunday morning breakfast time! This recipe is not for the faint-hearted and images might come across as disturbing. Please note however that these muffins did not go beyond our family walls, we were kind enough NOT to share them!

Sunday mornings are for lying in, waking up to the smell of grilled bacon and the perfect cup of tea. Not in our household however. Sticky Fingers makes sure we are up at the crack of dawn, breakfast calls for whatever we can scratch out of the cupboards and by the time you actually get to drink your tea it's lukewarm. This is how we do Sunday mornings in our home.

So, come breakfast time we've opened the fridge door a couple of times already, hoping that our fridge will magically through something delicious at us each time. But it does not. Thank the lord that our cupboard hunt lead us to a packet of cheat bran muffin mix. But that's so boring! Time to improvise. The not so magic fridge does happen to have two almost soggy apple. Aha! Apple bran muffins with some raisins sound a little perkier!

I drag kid away from Peppa Pig and we bake up a storm. Well, the aftermath look like a storm hit anyway!

BRAN MUFFINS WITH APPLE PUREE AND RAISINS (WITH A SPRINKLE OF DOG HAIR)

Before getting our bake on, we washed our hands, but I don't know why we bothered with this step really. We then sliced and chopped our soggyish apples and boiled them until soft. Kid Noah did me the huge favor of then blending the apples into a soft sauce.

Watch Sticky Fingers In Action:

We then poured our dry ingredients (cheat muffin mix) into our mixing dish and added the raisins. In a separate bowl we mixed all of the wet ingredients together, including the apple sauce (I added less milk than required so that the mixture wouldn't have too much liquid in it). We then mixed everything together. It was at this point, during the mixing action, that we sprinkled in the dog hair which was courtesy of kid Noah's clothes, which in turn was courtesy of dog wrestling match prior to Peppa Pig marathon.

Baking is very tedious work and it called for a naartjie snack mid-bake. *No naartjie peels were used in this recipe, although Kid Noah did try adding them to the mix.

Sticky Fingers okayed the batch of muffins before doing a quick taste test before we placed the mixture into a muffin tin and in the oven to bake. Will the muffins brewed into breakfast, kid Noah returned to his Peppa Pig episode and I did my duty of cleaning up the aftermath.

While our method of making these cheat muffins is slightly unorthodox, they did turn out delicious - I think it was the stinky feet on the counter and dog hair a la Charlie that made the difference!

IN ALL SERIOUSNESS:

OK, these muffins really did turn out well. They were crisp on the outside and soft and moist on the inside, with a subtle apple flavor, which made the bran a tad less dreary. The raisins added to the sweetness.

If you would like to give this recipe a go, simple purchase a cheat mix (or be ladi dah and make your own muffin mixture). Puree two large apples and add this to your mixture of liquid ingredients, adding less milk or oil). Preheat your oven to 180 degrees Celsius and when ready, bake for 15 minutes!

What not to do: let your child who is covered in dog hair and has dirty feet sit on top of the counter and help you bake.

That was such a fun post to read, it made me want to do something fun like that. I loved the ending of what not to do :D

My favorite muffins are really easy to make and have apples in them as well. I love how fresh they taste!

He he, it was fun to write about! Never a dull moment with my kiddo around! And have to agree, apples give muffins such a yummy and healthy taste!

Yes, A bran muffin is just well, boring! The apples and raisins make it more of something that you would like to eat. Raisins are a favorite here anyway. How can this go wrong?

Yup, raisins are healthy and enjoyable touch to nearly any meal!

What a helpful cutie! Your naartjie ingredient tells me you are also South African @sweetpea and also prefer lai di dah recipes ;)

Yup, we are Naairtjie loving South Africans! Good to meet you @buckaroo :)
