Avoid Starvation Response

As I’ve mentioned before, our bodies are exceptionally complex and are the product of hundreds of thousands of years of evolution. We are nomadic hunter gatherers at heart and as a result we have developed certain survival mechanisms.

One of these Survival Mechanisms is our starvation response. When food was abundant for our ancestors things were not a problem however when it became scarce like in winter for example, we needed a way to survive.

When our body feels it isn’t getting enough of the nutrients it needs it will enter starvation mode, it basically slows your metabolism and shuts down non essential systems, meaning your body requires less calories a day to survive.

The whole purpose is to keep you alive for as long as possible to get you through these lean times or should food not be available at all, to keep you alive until your next meal.

Starvation affects our fat loss in two ways.

If you trigger your starvation response during fat loss, your results will slow or even stop.

During starvation response, should you eat more calories than your body has set its metabolism at it will store as much of this excess as possible as Fat, it has no clue when it will get an opportunity like that again and will take full advantage of replenishing its stores and increasing the time you can be kept alive.

As our goal is to get the best results possible for you we need to avoid starvation response at all costs.

Over the next few posts I will discuss the ways that we can manipulate our bodies to avoid starvation response and ensure we get the maximum results from your fat loss.
