Plant a Garden in Your Front Yard!

in #foodisfree6 years ago (edited)

Eight years ago, a neighbor stopped by and told me something that expanded my vision far past the visible horizon. She mentioned that walking past my front yard garden inspired her to grow her first broccoli. It wasn't long before she had her group of friends growing their first gardens as well. Once this message circled back to me, I realized how impactful our small actions can really be. There is really no such thing as a small act. We are the seeds bursting through the pavement and blooming for the world.

The Food is Free Project has evolved from a front yard garden into an open source movement of over 400 cities around the world. Each food sharing project is about growing and sharing food, but they all look a bit different. Some of us have front yards, others rooftops, or maybe just a balcony or a window. Join us and let's plant a world of abundance!

Share your journey growing and sharing food with #foodisfree or #foodisfreeproject so the global community can be inspired by your actions.

Here are some inspiring highlights from the Food is Free worldwide community this week:

"The first of my fruit trees and the first of my verge plantings!! This dwarf black mulberry will be fruiting within two years and with some seasonal pruning I can keep it under 2.5 metres. Mulberries are delicious fruits. We don’t see them in the shops due to transport and packing issues, so if you have a chance, you should really put one in the ground! They are typically grown here in Australia along with persimmon and loquat, which are considered companion trees. I have many fond memories of playing under and in these trees and gorging myself on all three of the delicious fruits produced. Did you know that historical records suggest that the leaves of the mulberry tree were used by the Romans for the treatment of various diseases of the mouth, trachea, and lungs? I don’t know much about that, but I do know they are incredibly high in vitamin c and delicious fresh or in conserves or pies. Just a quick tip... if the juice stains your hands or face when eating them, crushing some young leaves in your hand and rubbing them on the affected spot should remove the stain. Im not sure if it works on your clothes though!! #gardening #garden #gardeninggoldcoast #vergeplanting #blackdwarfmulberry #dwarffruittree #mulberry #gardeninggoldcoaststyle #foodisfree #foodisfreeproject #foodisfreegoldcoast #foodisfreequeensland #foodisfreeaustralia #foodisfreeprojectgoldcoast #foodisfreeprojectaustralia #foodisfreeprojectqueensland #foodshouldbefree"

You are encouraged to take any ideas from #foodisfreeproject and tailor them to fit your community. We all have something to learn from each other and knowing we're not alone makes it much easier to take a step out into our community and plant the first seeds.

Thank you for all your future acts of kindness. Even the smallest of actions ripple far past our visible horizon. Never underestimate the ripples you're creating.

Take the first step and share your #foodisfree photos on social media so we can all stay connected and spread these ripples of inspiration far and wide. I'm excited for Steemit to allow us to grow and unite in ways we are yet to imagine!

Onward and Upward,
John

You really are on the cutting edge, and may the #STEEM blockchain be the piece that ends up blowing this thing up beyond all of our wildest dreams! Love and Respect forever! May we all learn to share, if only a little bit.

May we teach each other how to "fish" again... <3 <3 <3

PS: I LOVE this stand, so much OMG...!!

PPS: Soooooooooooooooo good to see you in my feed @foodisfree!!! *Smiles, Happy Dancing and Jazz Music!!!

Stoked to be spending some time back in the Steem world! I love that stand too! Australia and New Zealand have Food is Free projects launching each week. The momentum is wild over there. :) I'm brainstorming about how to best connect all of the Food is Free projects and I'd love to build our community on the Steem blockchain. That would give it the resilience of a seed. :)

There's a Steemit World Map project, I wonder if you could talk to that person and get one just for FiF projects? I unfortunately forget who started it, but I think a tag search would find them.

I know that #teamaustralia is a pretty huge tag, try using that, or even editing it into this post.

Also, are you on discord yet? It's possible to create your own server and invite others to it, we gather there to discuss. You can make different chat rooms in your server for specific ideas/locations.

Or you could join other discord servers, like the PAL (Peace, Abundance & Liberty) and network through them. There are a tonne of homesteading/growing type servers as well!

That is some awesome advice! I'd love to keep the conversation going on those ideas. I haven't looked into using discord for food is free, but it seems like a great way to connect with others and share ideas.

These will definitely be some of my goals over the wintertime. Let's stay in touch about it all. You rock!

Sounds great, message me anytime <3

Discord is known as the real Steemit lol :)

👍😃

That pretty cart really gets my imagination going for how I can formalize my sharing of the surplus. Until recently, all I ever had to put out were grocery sacks of lemons. But now I have so much more to contribute, and a worthy message to share!

I love that cart as well! It's so inspiring. Show us photos of your next food share. You rock!

You should check out the app Cropswap! It would be right up your alley! everyone on there buys, sells or trades organic and homegrown produce! :) its available all around the world and on apple + android

Awesome! I've heard of it, but haven't tried it out yet. Didn't realize it was out for Android now. Thanks so much for the reminder! I'll definitely check it out.

It's still on the first version launched to the public however it's very much like steem with a ton of great people already on there :) I'm so glad you have heard of it!! haha my boyfriend is one of the founders

It warms my heart to read this post! I first heard about Food is Free from a friend in town who had a surplus of bananas one year. She put them on a table in her front yard with a hand lettered sign that simply said 'free food - take what you like'

That introduction to the Food is Free movement sat in the back of my mind for a year or two. I have since moved onto a few acres of land and am beginning to improve the land in preparation for planting a food forest. I don't rightly know what I am doing, but I will learn as I go lol.

That is so cool to hear about your neighbor sharing her bananas along with your vision of a future food forest. I'm sure you'll have quite the abundance before you know it. Be sure to share your journey and photos on Steemit of your food forest! :)

You just planted 0.10 tree(s)!

Thanks to @nateonsteemit

What a stunning idea! I am so grateful for the resteem which lead me to read your post @foodisfree. I heard last week that we have the first "free fruit for hungry children" shelf here in South Africa. I was blown away. It's very encouraging considering the corrupt country and the high rate of theft. At least there are still a few generous hearted. Great post

I am looking forward to learning more about your project.

I am running a special radio show on MSP Waves - Food & Steem - that you might be interested in. 8pm - 11pm UTC.
