Food Symbols

in #foodphotography6 years ago (edited)

I think that State and country symbols are fascinating things! There are State bird, State Tree, State flower, State motto.... and see them in license plates, team logos, refrigerator magnet souvenirs, t-shirt designs...

I've been to many places in the United States, and one of the first things I want to know is: what food is most common in that area.

What food would each state be represented by if all the States in the USA were represented by food?

I would love to know what food best represents the State or country or place where you are from or where you live?

Thank you for commenting with your answer to my question. I appreciate you participation!

LOL, I'm not sure about the whole state, but in my area it seems like every little greasy spoon diner and many of the bigger restaurants all have the

🍔 JUMBO TENDERLOIN

It's usually as big as the plate and you can easily save 1/2 for later, even the chow-hounds! 😂 🤣

Is it PORK tenderloin,

or BEEF tenderloin?

I see you have been thru here! LOL

That seriously looks like the places
that serve the Jumbo Tenderloin! 😋 😎
I currently live in VIGO County IN and it is
really like the Nexus Of The Universe, not that
it is "All That" but it is likely the "center" of everything.
NUMEROUS Reasons. I might have made an old Article
about that in fact. We are the longest standing "Bellweather"
county for presidential elections. We always have hit the winner
since 1888, unbeaten winning streak. FACT. Crazy but true!

WOW< that is some unbelievable fact! I bet you are in the Guinness world book of records!

Well, not me personally 😁 😂 🤣
In the 1970 census, this was the Population Center of the entire USA. The "exact center" was actually in a cornfield so not a single soul was located "on center" :P
The old 20th century Railroad Map had nearly every train going cross country passing thru here. Al Capone in his day said he'd NEVER rob a bank here because the getaway would have been too dicey! Yes, Capone hung out here a lot. That was the days before Interstate warrants, a criminal could go to another state and be safe from the law as long as they did not break any. We also were known as the "Crossroads of America" because the main n/s (US41) and main e/w (US40) roads passed thru. This was also the birthplace of the iconic Coca-Cola bottle, and at one time the largest Coke bottling plant in the world was located here. WE WERE ALSO the original "Sin City" before Las Vegas got that title, it was on Time Magazine because of all the prostitution and gambling, neither of which was actually legal 🤔 🤨
Other dubious distinctions were that we used to be a WW3 "First Strike Nuclear Target" because of all the infrastructure and an Army Depot. Plus an airbase, and I think they know about my weapons and ammo cache too 😆 😉 Can't think of anything else atm but this county has a lot of other interesting history from the 19th century and earlier, as well. This was a French and Indian area, lots of stuff like that around and we are a possible site for an Indian Casino in the future... It has been talked about a lot.
Crazy place, for a metro area of only 100,000!

In Rio de Janeiro there is a typical food brought from Africa with the slaves called "feijoada". It is a kind of soup made with black beans and everything that a pig gives as food (skin, ears, entrails, feet, meat, etc).

WOW... so definitely interesting!!! And sounds delicious. What is the predominant flavor of the soup. Is it just salt, or do they add any citrus to the soup, or do they use herbs for flavor? I am so curious to know!

Okay, so I was curious about this dish "feijoada". I really looks delish!

You must have a good stomach for it is a little big in fats.

I love head cheese and eat it by itself or with sourdough bread, and I think head cheese would be bigger in fats.

UGH, you and my 80 yo Dad

😁 😂 🤣

It was in Germany that I got the exposure and developed the liking for these. Do you like sausages, @underground?

Yes but I never tried the head cheese... I suppose it would be good fried up, but the gelatinous look of it is not appealing to me LOL

The lower part of Michigan it would have to be the Coney Dog. They come in 2 different styles. Flint Coneys are loose hamburger with mustard and onions. Detroit Coneys are more like a Chili Dog with mustard and onions. Here is a pic of them.

The upper part of Michigan is known for it's Pasties. It's basically a meat pie, but is it ever good.

The Pasties look very much like the empanadas that I make, and looks as flaky as I make them too! Yummy!!! I think that I like the Flint Style Coney very much!!! Thanks, my friend for sharing these foods.

Funeral patatos and green jello

Which State would that represent, @corndogg42? And what are funeral potatoes. I don't think I've had that ever. Thanks for being FIRST, my friend! I appreciate you.

In Utah and with the potatoes trick I learned is to add ham or bacon so so good

OK, now I have an idea what they are. I must try making funeral potatoes, now that I know what it is. There is so much to learn...

@silversaver888 great question! For Pennsylavania it comes down to two and they literally represent 1/2 of the state each. First, are potato pierogies that wpuld reflect the western part of the state and Pittsburgh. The other is the philly cheese steak that represents its namesake Phildelphia. Both are delicious and I can not lie; I eat too many of each lol. Thanks for sharing!!

Oh WOW!!! I am hungry, and I love Philly Cheese Steak Sandwiches! And smothered onions on potato pierogies... YUMMY! I can make filled bite size individual pies or turnovers, like empanadas, so it is something similar to the pierogies. Thanks, @dwingsworld! I am learning so much!

Those all sound utterly delicious!! @silversaver888 turnovers are great! Thanks for sharing!

What about Scrapple @dwingsworld. No one but me ever seems to know what it is. lol

@vgholdings this is true but I dont think it is the food that people would identify the state for, however it is associated with the Pennsylavania Dutch so its possible. For those that dont know I usually sefine it as a ttpe of pork meatloaf made as not to waste any parts of the pig. Great suggestion brother!

Hmmm... When I think Wisconsin food, I think of brats and beer! This was a fun post sweetie!! I love reading all of the comments 😁 Have a great evening, my SSFL 👊💗

Yum, yum!!!! I LOVE brats!!!

BBQ beef in Wyoming! Or antelope burgers...

YES!!!! BBQ beef!!!! THANK YOU, my friend, for stopping by and sharing Wyoming's popular food! I appreciate you! Have a great week, take care.

There you go! Antelope burgers - I canned antelope meatballs this past winter - yum! (I prefer elk though.)

In MN I think we are known for the hot dish. This is tator tot hot dish.
tater-tot-hotdish.jpg

My all time favorite is deep fried cheese curds!! Love them so much.
