Hard To Swallow, Sometimes.

Defeat is hard to swallow and even the best of heads or best of talents seem to lose it sometimes. A lot has been said about Lionel Messi’s outburst and rightly so. Maybe many people were surprised it came from someone they believed to be quiet and humble but I am not surprised.

There is a thing pressure does and with his determination, hoping this year would bring an end to his national trophy drought, you can understand why the defeat took its toll on him. He is human after all and no one likes to lose. Defeat and the tag of a loser will always get to anyone, but how we choose to handle it matters.

You need to see the case with Van Persie when he was still with Arsenal to understand. Anyone would feel hard done by when decisions go against them. Van Persie was sent off against Barcelona and we all know it was undeserved. Can I take a recap of Chelsea with Barcelona as well when decisions went against them and it looked like the game was mandated to be won by Barcelona? I could go on and on as to how tiny details determine the course of highly anticipated match but then, isn’t that why we love football?

There have been instances where VAR saved the day and then the same VAR ruined the day. It comes with the territory and I wouldn’t blame Lionel Messi for lashing out, rather I would perfectly understand that he couldn’t handle the defeat as he should. Defeats always leave that sour taste in our mouth and we need to get on with it.

In as much as the red seem a bit harsh, you can understand the position of the Referee too. He wants to be in control of the match and also make it clear he isn’t showing favouritism but then, a decision has to be made in a split second and that was what he came up with. Football is indeed unpredictable on all fronts.

Another title eludes Lionel Messi and I also read reports that due to the defeat, Argentina plans on leaving South America Football Federation. I think that would be a step too far and I think that is because they desperately wanted to win this COPA America and they couldn’t.

Brazil are deserved winners and rightly so. Defeat is part of life. No one can win it all, and particularly not even Ronaldo and Messi. Ronaldo doesn’t have a World Cup title to his name too and even Dani Alves that we have come to learn as the most decorated player now hasn’t won a World Cup too.
