The former Spain and Real Madrid captain was hurriedly brought in as a replacement to former coach, Julen Lopetegui who was sacked a couple of days before Spain flagged off their World Cup campaign.

With just a few days to the World Cup, Lopetegui was announce as the successor to Zinedine Zidane at Real Madrid to take over after the tournament, an announcement that did not go down well with the Spanish FA.

Spain drew their first game 3-3 against Portugal before defeating Iran by a lone goal and courted exit when they trailed Morocco in the last match but wen on to win the group after securing a 2-2 draw.

The former World Champions eventually got eliminated in the knockout stage by host nation, Russia on penalties and it seems it didn't take Hierro more than four games to realise that the job is not meant for him, perhaps, not yet time.
