RVP Calls It Quit

Former Netherlands International, Robin van Persie has called it quit on his professional playing career.

The former Arsenal captain played his last professional match for Feyenoord as they slipped 2-0 at home to ADO den Haag in the Eredivise.

It was an emotional moment for him when he was substituted in the 92nd minute and honoured by both teams who formed a guard of honour for him as he walked off the pitch for the last time as a professional.

He would not be a part of the Feyenoord team that would play Fortuna Sittard on Wednesday in a rescheduled match from April 28 which was done to accommodate Ajax's engagement with Tottenham in the semifinal of the Champions League.

RVP as he is fondly called rejoined his boyhood club in 2017 and at the beginning of this campaign, mentioned that he would not extend his playing career beyond this year.

After his final match, he further stated that making the decision a long time was a good idea as he would not have been able to come to such a decision if he had waited till this moment, which would have made it tougher.

Van Persie started his playing career at Feyenoord where he left in 2004 for Arsenal and spent 8 years in North London.

Surprisingly for a player who grew to become one of the world's deadliest, he could only win one FA Cup with the Gunners, which came in his first season.

He would later trade North London for Manchester when he joined United in Alex Ferguson's final season in charge and led the Reds to a Premier League title.

He also had a stint with Fenerbache after leaving United, before rejoining Feyenoord, his boyhood team in 2017.

In what has been a glittering career for the powerful left-footed striker, he won 102 caps for Netherlands, leading them to the 2010 World Cup final, where they loss to Spain, courtesy of an Andreas Iniesta goal.

He was also part of the Dutch side that made it to the semifinals four years later and retires as the all-time goalscorer for Netherlands with 50 goals.
