Kicking around in the bushes : Checking the river banks for berries

in #foraging6 years ago

I decided to go check out the river behind my house for berries. We found about two cups of raspberries.

So first we have to hike down this path that is muddy and snotty.

Then trek along the rivers edge to find bushes. I was more worried about the kids falling in the flood level waters then taking pictures. But I did get a few when we stopped on safe ground.
We even seen a micro frog in a very precarious spot on the trail. It was about an inch long from nose to rump and dark in color. Of all the places to find it it was in a washed out area where we had to grab bushes for handles.

This bush was a pain in the ass I get too. It was on a slop covered in grass, rose hip and willow. Once I found I footing I got at least 30 berries from this one and another in the area.

This was when it was about half way filled up.

Foraging season? How far to you expand your search for the berry hunts?

Yeah late summer to late fall. I try to stay local.

There are a lot of people in Alaska who beg for berry location, they don’t want to look for them selfs and do the hard work. I have found all my berry spots all on my own.
Sorry I keep seeing people beg, it’s like a whining toddler that needs popped in the mouth and told “No”!

Such a pretty area!

It really is! Planning on heading back to go fish for silvers.

Yeah, some of the best berry bushes are always in the worst places.

I'm a bot. I detect haiku.

My husband would have inhaled those raspberries as soon as he picked them. Neat you have some out in the wild. We planted about 30 plants in our garden this year. Hopefully in the spring we'll have a big harvest if the plants make it through their first winter.

That’s what the kids do, so I had to make a deal. They can eat one for every 10 or 20. That way we get some for jams and jellies.
