Teaching Our Children Liberty: The Tuttle Twins and The Miraculous Pencil

in #freedom6 years ago

It's Tuttle Twin Tuesday!

Every Tuesday for the next 8 weeks, I will review each of the Tuttle Twin books. I made a previous post on this subject a few days back, you can see it here.

The Tuttle Twins and The Miraculous Pencil

Teaching our children about the ability of free market capitalism to produce goods and services that would otherwise be impossible.

It's the marvel of economic spontaneous order that makes the pencil miraculous. It seems like a complicated thing to teach children, but it's important. Spontaneous order is:

When social harmony and market efficiency are achieved through the independent decisions of countless individuals, each guided by their own desires and self-interest.

What a concept! Achieving self-interests results in market efficiency? But what about Central Planning? Government oversight? Regulations?

This book demonstrates, through the production of the the miraculous pencil, that the seemingly impossible task of producing a pencil with material and skills from all over the earth, is a result of free market that would be impossible with central planning. It happens in spite of government oversight and regulations.

The Family Tree of the Miraculous Pencil

Just like people, an object that's produced from a multitude of sources, has something of a "family tree". This book shows all the different people involved in the making of a pencil.

"I, Pencil" helps us understand how we can cooperate together to innovate, produce and exchange products and services to improve our lives and create a better world.

Free Market Capitalism Benefits Everyone

We are teaching our children that "capitalism" is not a bad word, no matter what people will try to tell you. By learning about the miraculous pencil, our children will have an understanding that with a free and open market, resources from many different sources come together to produce a useful product for everyone.

...because we divide up the work into different jobs, each person works on something that others can use... we work together automatically, without really knowing it. There's no boss telling everyone what to do."

This is a foundational concept, that people can work for their own self-interest while bring about a self-less advantage for everyone. That, if given the opportunity, people will work together automatically without an overseer dictating and micromanaging the whole operation.

Our children (3 and 5 years old) really love these books. It's very pleasing as a parent to see my children engaged in interested in books that carry a solid, freedom based message. Highly recommended. Thanks for checking them out! @ironshield

I've been looking for a book series my 2nd son can his own. Looks like a great option for sure thanks bud

They are really excellent. My children really like the pictures and the stories. @ironshield

The USSR used to come to talks at the UN in the 1960's, and when they left, they stold all the pencils, regularly, because they could not make decent pencils, under Communism.

Ha, it's like a scene from a '60 comedy... except for real. Nothing funny about communism. @ironshield

Yes, but I am just rotten enough, I would have brought in Russian pencils....

Looks like another fun book! I'm sure the kids would appreciate learning how much is put into making a pencil. I'm interested in knowing that too! Ha! Where it all comes from and how everyone has to work together to make it happen. Fun fun!

It's a really neat book. It gets a person thinking, what does it really take to build something - even as simple as a pencil. @ironshield

How long are these books? Are they chapter books or are they short enough to read all in one sitting?

The books are 50 - 60 pages long, no chapters. If children do not have a long attention span, it might take a few sessions to read a whole book in one sitting. We can usually read a book in 10 - 20 minutes. Little text, lots of pictures. My girls like them enough, we could read 2 or 3 in one sitting, but we stick to one a night. @ironshield
