She sat in the wheelchair and waited for the doctor to return. She had waited all her life, another ten minutes wouldn't kill her.

She had waited to go back into the classroom, while the other kids ran across the playground. She had waited while the slow song ended, before her friends returned to wheel her out onto the gymnasium floor for a group dance. She had waited for the bus' chair lift to reach the ground, as the sleet and freezing rain pelted her face and dampened her new interview dress. She had waited for the line of people to thin, until a gracious soul stopped to hold the door for her and escort her through.

"Miss Gentry? I have your results," the doctor lowered himself to eye level with Annaliese. He unhooked a connection at the base of her neck, and another at the base of her spine. Seventeen months of nerve regrowth therapy had come to an end. "You are done waiting."
