Rockabye baby on the tree top, when the wind blows, the cradle will rock. If the bough breaks the cradle will fall, but Mama will catch you, cradle and all...

It was little Annie's favorite song. That year, she turned 5. They had just moved into town. She was the only child of Mr and Mrs Townsend, the rich owners of the Townsend Bank. It was a small town, townfolks were nice and friendly.

Every weekend was a party at the Townsend's, but only the rich and famous would appear. Guests would dance while the live band serenaded, the hall filled with little whispers and giggling, and never ending was the flow of champagne and alcohol. The parties were often the talk of the town. Everyone was impressed. Some were envious of the guest list. Many said they had a ball. Many except one Mrs Townsend.

Mrs Townsend was a beautiful lady, she was gracious and gentle. She loved living a simple quiet life, but her desires were the total opposite from her husband's. Tom Townsend loved the high end life, he was lofty and ambitious. The more attention he had, the bigger his ego grew. His wife was his pride. Men would look at her with luring eyes, and Tom's pride would swell bigger than the hot air balloon.

On quiet days, Sarah would be seen strolling around the garden with little Annie. They built a swing under one of the bigger trees. Some days when Tom comes home early smelling like age old whiskey, Sarah would gently coax little Annie to go to the garden swing and wait for her while she attended to her husband. God knows it would always end with bruises on her body, bruises laced with heartaches.

One mid morning, it happened again. "Go," said Sarah, "just sit there and wait."

And waited, she did.

Little Annie waited, and waited, and waited. Days turned into nights. Seasons came and went. She continued waiting for her mama to come for her.

But her mama never came.

Nobody knew what happened that day. Sarah was never seen appearing since. Nobody dared talk about it.

The Townsends moved away a few years later. But 'til this day, some folks would claim they still hear the faint singing of little Annie's favorite song coming from the garden.

Rockabye baby on the tree top, when the wind blows, the cradle will rock. If the bough breaks the cradle will fall, but Mama will catch you, cradle and all...

What a sad story. You write very well. I love the party description.

Thanks @wandrnrose7. Yes, a sad story indeed.

Have a wonderful day, dear!

Oh yours a sad story too like mine. Soon we come out with some happy story. Sounds like she passed away?

I love reading your story as always ;)

Haha ya lo, actually wanted to make it sound a little scary in the end, but it ended very little scary and lots of sadness. I just wish the readers can imagine the sad and lonely little girl voice singing the song in the end, you know, like those ghost movies 😂 yes, we shall write some happy stories soon!! Thanks for dropping by @iamjadeline Xx

PS: Sarah might have left, or she was murdered. Nobody knew. 'Til today, it is still a mystery.

So sad!!!! I will always think of this story whenever I hear this rhyme which is quite often being a Pre-Kindergarten teacher. Beautiful writing!

Thanks, @mumma-monza. I hope it doesn't spoil the song whenever you're being reminded of the story :/ See you around! :)

Well written and sad...
Im glad to have read it! Thank you!

You have some writing skills, have you ever written a book?

Aww thanks, you're too kind! No, I have not. 😅 that's the beauty of freewrite, it challenges our imagination and creativity! Hope to see you hop on the ride some time 😉

Yes! I am planning on it! I enjoy writing, but I have been so busy the past gajillion years being a mother, wife, homesteader, homeschooler... well, it doesnt leave a lot of mental energy left over. I have been enjoying writing blog posts for Steemit however, and finding that writing is coming easier for me and am rediscovering the writing skills I used to have. (Nothing great, but I was able to write a little, back in the day...)
Thanks for the encouragement!
And consider writing a book! I think it would be fantastic!

Good to know! Yea I agree, managing a home does take a lot of mental energy. Imagine repeating the same words over and over and over again 😂 Coupled with lots of physical work. Phew, sometimes I don't know how we mothers to it! I'd love to read more of your writings sometime soon, looking forward to having you join us in freewrites! But be warned, it is very addictive! Haha xx

Haha it sounds fun, and not a bad thing to be hooked on! ♥

Oh no! Another heartbreaking story! Well, you did a really good job on it, anyway!
