Mom's Cousin Lenna the Tart - Part 3 or 4 -Day 591: 5 Minute Freewrite: Monday - Prompt: Rule

Dwayne had pushed her too far this time.

She let him rule the roost after promising “until death us do part,” and she honored her vows for more than forty years, but then she read the little paperback someone sneaked into her coat pocket at church. It had to be that nurse from Dr. Shandler’s office. Sandy. The one who asked all those questions about her UTI, pried all those details out of her about Dwayne and his daily demands, and wrote down hotline numbers for women’s crisis centers. As if, after four decades of marriage, Dwayne’s usual antics had suddenly reached crisis proportions. As if she was going to call her a husband a rapist. As if she wouldn’t have left him sooner if she had anywhere to go.

But she was sixty now. Sandy, that prying nurse, had a way of asking questions that made the truth leak out sideways. Still, it was easy for Sandy to say leave that SOB. Dwayne would find her, whether at a local shelter or at their daughter’s in Germany or with anyone she’d ever emailed or “friended.”

Her mom’s cousin Lenna, though, didn’t have a computer. Or a cell phone. Her name had never been included in the phone book; it was just R. Runyan until Rex died, and it remained R. Runyan after that. Lenna didn’t exist online. Paid cash for everything. How did anyone get away with no credit card in the 21st Century? You couldn’t even fill up a gas tank anymore without swiping a card first. Or book a hotel room.

There was no guarantee Lenna would remember her cousin's daughter. If she drove all the way to Arizona only to find nobody left at the Runyan ranch, she’d come up with Plan B. For now, it was Plan A for Arizona. Plan B might be for bullet, but if God was on her side, like Sandy said, she’d escape Dwayne’s rule without damning her soul to hell.

She packed a pistol in her purse, just in case.

Lenna’s place seems the right place to go if she doesn’t want Dwayne to find her. Jesus with a gun sort of loses his Christian image. 😂

Jesus picked a couple of fine weapons @carolkean 😁

Yeah, isn't that image a hoot? I don't know why I find it so captivating. Jesus, "Turn the Other Cheek," Jesus, the nonviolent, Jesus at the door with a gun -- something about it really speaks to me. What does that say about me? Pretty sure I'd rather not find out. 😁

I know a nurse like her....hehe
