Prompt of the day “Pound Cake” - The Accidental Trades Person!!!
What an odd name for a cake, finally a prompt I know something about.
Where do you think the name “pound cake” comes from? Do you think of a cake being pounded? Maybe the weight of the thing is a pound? Maybe it’s because the cake is so dense and rich?
Nope
Pound cake is referring to the measure of chief ingredients. Typically 1 pound of sugar, flour, and butter. Equal proportions, probably one of the simplest recipes out there for cake.
When trying to name something often in baking we end up with names that are actually relevant to the creation of the product. We call it “pound cake” because it’s an easy way to remember equal measure ingredients and it sounds intriguing VS say “3 ingredient cake”.
There are many of these names with meaning for bakery products, hell 90% of bakery good are developed by mistake!
Ciabatta - Name means old floppy slipper because at the time of creation bread was not leavened and typically very dense, literally the first person to try it held it up and asked “is this a floppy slipper?” As the bun flipped over 😝
Nanaimo Bars - Comes from just 200 km away from me in Nanaimo, was created as a contest entry but did not come out right. The contest was not won but the entry was loved so much she has become an international sensation and all the creator wanted was to put her home town on the map for something!
