Girty snorted and stomped her hoof irritably when she saw the saddle coming her way. When she was young she had loved to get out into the open country and go on an adventure, she had relished running through the meadows mane flying as she hit her stride. She had enjoyed the cool drinks from the spring-fed creek and grazing on fresh clover and new grass under the shade of tall willows as her rider picnicked with family and friends nearby. But now she was old and could no longer run as before, in fact, it was getting harder and harder for her to even walk out to the knoll and catch a glimpse of the old riding trail. She looked at the man warily as he set the saddle over a rail and selected a little-used bridle off of a hook on the barn wall. Surely he didn’t expect her to actually carry him, not with all of this back pain that she endured every day even without a rider. But after arguing to no avail over taking the bit, she stood still for the saddle resigning herself to a day of intense pain and discomfort.

The man led her out into the sunshine, but just into the corral and not through the gate. What is this she thought to herself, does he just intend to ride me in this small area and not even give me the opportunity to see something new and different? It was then that she heard the tiny voice and the funny little giggle, a sound that only little humans can make. Girty relaxed when she caught sight of the child being led by the man’s woman, so this was it, they just wanted to give this baby a thrill. There had not been any children around here in a very long time so this was a totally unexpected surprise for her. Suddenly Girty’s heart softened and she was actually thrilled, it was good to still have a purpose she thought. The man talked to her gently then, lovingly, they had been together for years and she should have known that he would not do anything to hurt her. Now she was ashamed of her behavior earlier and she nuzzled her head against him as an apology. It was a good day after all, where there is still purpose and value there is life, and for today at least, Girty once again felt alive and useful.

**Disclaimer: I often use the freewrite prompt to tell a story instead of doing a pure freewrite, so they sometimes take longer than 5 minutes and usually have some editing. But I try to do my story straight through at one sitting without any unnecessary breaks.

This was a sweet story Lee, thank you! I loved that Gertie wasn't going to be ridden by anyone but a small child and would be able to hear the joy of the little one without having a heavy burden on her back. 💙

Time to cut loose and write!

Freewrite Day 204 - late

Aw, what a sweet story. I really like how you told it through the horse's thoughts. Oh, to be young again...for old Gertie. At least she felt young again for one more day. : )
