The hospital | Lola's Story Part 45 | 5 Minute Freewrite ~ Prompt: food on the table
Part 44
Lola heard footsteps rustling just outside her door.
“Mom?” Lola tried.
Her mom pushed open the door slightly holding a bag of chips. “Lola, these are terrible, you gotta taste it," she laughed. "Honey?”
“Something’s wrong,” she said as tears filled the brim of her eyes.
Part 45
“I was just getting ready to put the food on the table, but I’m sure it will be fine until your father gets home,” Gloria clicked on the turn signal. “Tommy is still at Joey’s house, maybe the Smith’s can feed him tonight for me? When we get there I’ll text his mom. That should do it really,” she prattled on nervously.
Lola sat uncomfortably in the passenger seat, her contractions had slowed but they were still coming every ten minutes or so.
“The doctor said to keep taking deep breaths. Is that what you’re doing? I can’t tell from over here,” she stole a quick glance at Lola.
“Yes,” Lola said gripping the door handle as her muscles squeezed around the lower half of her belly.
“We’re almost there. Just hang in there a second longer. Dr. McCalister said she’d meet us at the hospital, did I already tell you that?”
“Yes,” she said taking another long breath.
They pulled into the parking, and Gloria rounded the car up to the entrance. Emergency Door was printed in large red letter above the revolving doors.
“I’ll drop you off here. You find a place to sit back down, then I’ll handle the rest of it,” she gave Lola’s knee a squeeze, a look of guilt tugged at her eyes.
“It’ll be okay, Mom,” Lola smiled for her.
“It’s just that if I hadn’t gotten upset over Kyle…and that letter…maybe you wouldn’t...” she trailed off.
Lola chuckled darkly to herself. “If I can assure you of anything, it’s that you are not the cause.”
She eased herself out of car, and walked into the building, the icy air conditioning hit her perspiration and she stood still, eyes closed, letting it roll over her.
“Lola?” a sweet voice greeted her. She opened her eyes to see Kyle’s older sister, Rose, standing in scrubs behind the front desk.

Did she know she was pregnant before Kyle died? I am not actually sure which is why I am wondering if his sister was aware. Plus, many people don't share their first trimester and don't show either so it's possible that the news hadn't been announced yet.
You're right, he did seem hesitant to put Lola in danger didn't he. Maybe he left his sister a clue that she doesn't even know is a clue! Maybe Lola will spot it and instantly know what it means. She is clever.

Hi Sis may i ask, i haven't really understand yet, what the meaning of 5 minutes, is that's mean just short writing is it?
Hey there! 5 minute freewrites are based on the idea of setting a time and writing for five minutes and letting your thoughts flow...good or bad lol. There are no set rules, only the ones you set for yourself. Sometimes I stick to the 5 minutes, but sometimes I go longer if the story needs. 😀
So any kind of genre is it ok?

Absolutely! And they don't even need to be a story. Some people write poems or even ramble on what the prompt makes them about. I read a great one the other by @kimberlylane who described a time as a teacher where she felt really fed up with her job. The freewrites are really there to help inspire us to write everyday or as much as possible.

Poor Lola! I hope Rose is a friend to her. She really doesn't a whole lot more trouble, but I have a feeling there will be before the story ends...
You're probably right. Lola has had a rough go.
I hope the words "sweet voice" means Rose isn't gonna be a problem. Heaven knows Lola can't take much more of this! She needs some earl grey tea.
