Weekend Freewrite Single Prompt: Scratch

in #freewrite6 years ago (edited)

I was chasing and following through the Australian Masterchef 2018 with my husband and whoa, it was intense yet very touching!

Among the many Masterchef's different countries have, I too enjoy the Australian one more like many other audiences. We were catching up with it only after the whole series was out. It is very educational and relational, as it took a span of 3 months for the participants who are homechefs to reach the grand finale. They also travel to different places to get exposures. Sounds so fun and yet the pressure in it is super crazy.

In the finale, it all came down to just Ben and Sashi, respectively a builder and a prison officer. During the segment with Heston Blumenthal, it was very crazy. You know Heston, he's like a "mad scientist" and is super talented. He came out with this dish named Counting Sheep. You should really see the puzzled expressions on Ben's and Sashi's faces when they first saw the dish. It was so mind boggling, as Heston served the meringue with ice-cream on a floating pillow! Besides that, there is also a plate of fluffy light sponges with mousse served with a liquid nitrogen made coconut ice-cream, super insane!

They were given a recipe to replicate it in 4 hours with the exact measurements of how Heston did it. Even with that, things went wrong and Ben accidentally added xanthine gum in his ice-cream and he had to start from scratch. That was almost half way through the time allocation. So nerve-wrecking. He picked himself up and he started all over. It was very admirable to watch because Ben has this spirit of not giving up in the face of difficulties. I remember watching him in the earlier episodes and oh dear, I thought he was going to be eliminated but he came back so much stronger and kept pushing himself out. He did it, yet again, nailing finesse in his food plating. He once did this pavlova with a marshmallow hidden inside, wow!

As for Sashi, he is one talented guy in cooking flavours and spices in his food with very strong Asian heritage. He looks like a really great humble guy who just wants to introduce his home flavours to the table. In the finals, he made a mistake towards the end with his mousse. He was supposed to insert in the fillings which was very complicated to do, but he didn't and his mousse was already frozen. We could all see he was panicking and he really didn't have much time left. He gave himself some pat to calm down while his family kept cheering him on. If it wasn't for them, I think he may have broken down. I was thinking if he could do everything from scratch but he ran out of ingredients. He managed to think and took the risk of thawing the frozen mousse and insert in the fillings when it was softer. So risky and it came out broken at first. 2 minutes left and finally he took them out from the freezer again and thank God, they came out whole!

I guess sometimes we are given chances to do something from scratch again when we make a mistake but sometimes there really isn't any room for that to start all over again. In similar situations, we have to gauge what is the best to be done. As powerful people who can handle mistakes, we have to also be able to accept when certain things cannot be restarted from scratch and find a different solution in it. These were my raw thoughts after watching such a nervous final from the Australian Masterchef. And of course, there was only one winner who was the well-deserved Sashi who nailed it in the first round by being far ahead of Ben but I see Ben too had his confidence restored and his ability acknowledged.

Freewrite is a prompt writing initiated by @mariannewest and @improv to write a free-flow post without correcting or editing. I checked out her post to really get what it is before I jumped on the bandwagon. Basically, there is no right or wrong, just let the mind and fingers do their work, to find our creative self and let it come out of us.

I don't know what will I come out with if I were given ingredients and create a recipe from scratch. I will be scratching my head wondering there. Haha.

Wow! I have not been watching the MasterChef for some time now. And after reading your freewrite, I feel like I should go back and watch all the MasterChef now. And what's most amazing and unbelievable is the MasterChef Junior. All of them are so young, and some of time are so tiny, and yet, they can cook all the awesome dishes.

Thank you for freewriting with us! I am here to deliver your prompt:- Day 332: 5 Minute Freewrite: Sunday - Prompt: kit
