Broke | 5-minute Freewrite

Little Gaik woke up and found her mummy wasn't on her bed. Gaik searched high and low and found her mummy sitting at one corner at the living hall eating rice soaked in water.

"Mummy, you hungry?"

"Oh, Gaik, did I wake you up? Why are you up in the middle of the night?"

"You mum? What are you doing?"

"Oh I am hungry..."

"Why do you just eat rice with water?"

"it is nice, you can try...."

Few days later, little Gaik found out her dad and mum were discussing which bills to pay first. They sounded like they did not have enough money. That night, mum asked Gaik and her sister to join in the fun. We were collecting all the coins we could find at home, piled them up, to exchange them into paper money. It was so much fun.

When Gaik became adult, mum reminisced the good old days when the family was almost broke. But somehow, we survived.

However, we, as children, never felt a slightest feeling that we were almost no money. Mum and dad told me that whether we were broke or not wasn't based on how much money we had. It is the mentality. We can have millions but still feel not enough. Or we can have little but feel sufficient. I know they were trying their best.

Money come. Money goes. Broke is just a past tense of 'money being used up'. Eventually, money will come again, whether alot or little. Whichever, we will use it with wisdom.

Be abased and abound in life ~ is the greatest lesson I learn in life. Sometimes, we enjoy a big luxury sumptuous meal. Sometimes we have plain bread. Both meals are worth giving thanks.

Am I broke? I don't know. Because I really love eating plain bread. Haha.
