Food To The Table (freewrite)

He rushed home and quickly headed to the bathroom to bathe before he heated up the food, prepared and brought the food to the table.

There were squid cooked in butter sauce, pasta with pesto sauce and spinach, prawns coated with oats, pumpkin soup, roasted duck and chicken salad for that day.

"Children, it is dinner time," his voice echoed in their small hut as the children stomped out with laughter.

"Wah, another awesome dinner, dad. We love your new job. Next time we want to be a chef at hotel too!!" his eldest exclaimed.

Then, the 3 musketeers chomped down the food. The little small hut they lived in was brighten up by their chuckles as they ate their food. Oh my, they must had been working hard on the street begging for money. Slum kids, were the usual way people addressed them as they begged for money.

Things were different now since they knew they could come back home to a table filled with food. Papa would surely pack all the leftover food from hotel to them. Life had never been happier. They used to only eat plain biscuits and plain water if the begging business was bad that day.

As the daddy gazed at his children, at one point he felt guilty. He was not able to support them as good enough as his wife wished. But this was the best thus far. The sight of little children eating without worry was one beautiful shot you wouldn't want to miss.

Everything was worthwhile now. Even if he would be beaten up or mocked at or being chased away for begging food.

Yes, every evening, he waited at the back lane of the hotel for hotel's buffet lunch to be over. There he was, waiting patiently at the trash area, and once the kitchen helpers were out with leftover food trays, he begged them to not throw but placed the food in his plastic bags.

Most of the time, Tom would meet good-hearted kitchen helpers. Only occasionally, if he was unlucky, he would be beaten up by other beggars on the same lane. Those who were hangry.

Wow, such an emotional story and a sad reality for way too many people in the world. Thank you for this.

Oh so touching. It grasped the soul immediately from the starting to the end. Your imagination is very good though this can be a reality for some people.

Really pulled at my heart strings @iamjadeline. A subtle reminder to us all that this is the reality for so many people and a reminder for us to always remain grateful for what we have.

A heartwarming tale indeed. It’s amazing how much leftover food is wasted in restaurants and supermarkets.
