The Little Voice - Mike's Story Begins

Mike Randall looked at his watch. He was hungry and couldn't wait for the school bell to go to signal lunch. It felt like he'd been in this lesson all day, even though it was actually only 10 minutes.

It amazed him how Mr Hall always managed to make an interesting topic, one he loved, into a marathon of suffering. But he did.

Suddenly a large thrill bell began to sound. Mr Hall looked up from his text book and looked at the class in front of him, almost like he was surprised to see them there. "Okay, class, no need to panic. You know the drill. Everyone is to leave everything exactly where it is and stand in an orderly line by the door."

The students glad of any reason to get out of this dull lesson couldn't help showing their excitement. Mike however wondered if he could sneak his sandwich out of his bag unseen so he could eat it outside in the line outside. He looked over to where Matilda was and realised she wasn't in the room.

Where had she disappeared to? She had been there at the start of the class. Then the door opened and Matilda entered. "Sorry, Mr Hall, I didn't know whether I should come here or make my way outside."
