We went to a place with years of tradition

But Samy was having none of that. The idiot felt that he somehow had the right to comment on their traditions. Disrespectful of the fact they had asked, and the tribe had obliged. He would roll his eyes when the women folk, waited for their men to eat first. He would snigger when the leader explained why they didn't kill the wild animals especially the snakes even though the children could get hurt.

The rest, listened politely and only asked questions, keeping their surprise and sometimes shock well hidden. But Samy couldn't keep his opinions to himself. The rest would nudge him when he went a bit too far. Or give him dirty looks if they were not close enough. But nothing could stop him from being loud and obnoxious. He just regurgitated his stupid brains without edits.

They had asked a friend of a relative of a friend of a friend of a relative, or something like that. It wasn't easy but when they found out they were going to spend two weeks, in a place they had never heard off, they knew it was legi. They were counting on extra points. Their professor would be impressed.

Palabasapi, the little girl who served them meals, always had a big smile on her face though she was very shy. But today, she seemed a little distracted, and refused to look at them.

When Ayanna reached out to touch her, she quickly moved away. Bowed, like she always did that indicated she was done, and ran away. Ayanna wasn't sure if she understood English though there had been many occasions that indicated that she did. Every time she bowed, it amused the company of five, well four except for Samy of course, who for the next few minutes would break into the worst British accent pretending he was royalty.

With just 2 days left, they decided one last walk around to see if they had missed anything. But they had to have Gurunda with them. Gurunda was their official guide. There wasn't anything scheduled this morning, and they didn't want to waste a day, so they were sure the tribe wouldn't mind so much if they walked around a little. In the common areas where they have already been many times. The tribe already knew them. Maybe they would see things differently without an official guide.

Early that morning they were part of worship. Well, more like they observed as everybody, kids included were up before the sun, kneeling facing east, chanting as they waited for the sun to rise. Gurunda later explained that sometimes there were sacrifices, but he didn't think there would be one in the next couple of days before they leave. They'd sacrifice chickens or goats, depending on the occasion.

They were a little disappointed that they couldn't witness a sacrifice. They just had to take Gurunda's interpretation of it.

Because he never got the chance to change

When Samy started with his bitching again, Ayanna had to stop him. It was just so not the thing to do.

"Shut up!! Just don't be that person!!"

He laughed. Sometimes, he would say sorry but hardly ever. He had his demons that he fought, having been brought up by a drug addict mother and many uncles and step fathers. He was bitter about everything. He had a chip on his shoulder.

And when they heard he was going to be in their team, all four and Samy were upset. But Professor Lee promised them extra marks if they could work together as a team. Ayanna, Angie, Karla and Bengy talked about it through, trying to justify his rubbish attitude. Maybe he was that way because he never got the chance to change. Maybe he would be nicer, spending time with non-angry kids like them.

But Samy was Samy. If anything it was worse, because he was in their faces all the time. And he made them look bad. He picked on everything. They were embarrassed for him. They were embarrassed for them selves. They were lucky that they only had to pay for food and water and electricity. It was to be handed to them as a token at the end of their stay.

But Samy seemed to think they had something up their sleeves. Two nights ago, he got up screaming. Bengy had to calm him down and the girls came running to find out what had happened. But he finally calmed down, he laughed it off and started saying stupid, mean things again. Things that irritated them, so they went back to sleep.

The trip was coming to an end. They had got as much as they could, and the last couple of days the plan was just to relax. However, they still had their eyes and ears out for more to take away of this tribe and their traditions. They were also very tired of Samy, and suddenly those extra marks for team work didn't even seem so enticing anymore. He had taken the fun out of everything . They were ready to go home.

what the hell for

On their last night, after all their packing was done, they lounged around in their room. Bengy and Samy had joined them and they were hoping Palabasapi would come around. They wanted to give her a little something for being such a sweet heart. She had also been behaving very strangely the last couple of days and they figured it must be because she was going to miss them.

Samy, surprisingly was very quiet. He just kept pacing up and down, and if he sat down, he was just very restless. He made the rest feel uncomfortable. After a while the girls decided to call it a night. Ayanna, got up and opened the room door for them to leave. Bengy got up to leave, but Samy who was pacing, sat down.

"We are tired and we have a long drive home. Let's just go to bed. And tomorrow it is back to civilisation."

Samy shook his head and stared at Ayanna. Now he was creeping her out. The rest were also feeling uneasy.

"Samy? What is it?" asked Benjy.

"Let's just stay in this room."

"What the hell for? Just go back to your room. Go and sleep!!" Angie, was starting to get irritated.

"No. Just close the door. Let's stick together."

Samy looked really scared, and Ayanna had goose bumps. She closed the door and sat close to Angie and Karla. They huddled a little closer. What was wrong with Samy? Was he possessed. Did he finally say or do something so wrong, that he pissed off some spirit.

He came over and sat on the bed. Ayanna, Angie and Karla together, as if they had rehearsed it, "Get off!! What's wrong with you?"

He shook his head, and leaned in closer. The leaned away in a choreographed move. He looked around as if to check. Bengy came closer. Samy looked at Ayanna.

"They are coming for you. That's what I dreamt of the other night. They are coming for you. You are the virgin. You are the sacrifice. They know about you . The droughts are coming. They need a sacrifice. They need you."

Ayanna's voice quivered, "Rubbish! Are you on drugs or something!! No one's coming. Just go to bed Samy!!"

"No I am staying. As long as I am here, they won't come. They think I am dirty and they wouldn't want to ruin their ritual. We need to stay together until they all gather for worship. We will leave then. Right now, we have to stay together. Ayanna, you have to stay with me."

Everybody turned to look at Ayanna. She nodded.
