Jam Tomorrow?

"Jam tomorrow?" he said as he was putting his horn away. He didn't look up because he wasn't sure if it was the right thing to do.
After all, he was the newcomer. The new kid as the bandleader had called him when he called on him for a solo.
Did he do well enough? Would they want him to come back for the next jam session?
He sure hoped so. These were the people he had traveled cross country to play with. His heroes.
It had blown him away to see them in real life.
Sure, he was familiar with their faces. All the walls in his room were plastered with the faces he was looking at now.
He sighed. Ever since he remembered this music had spoken for him. Had said what he couldn't express in words.
Somehow, when he put the horn to his mouth, he was eloquent. The sound seemed to be flowing from his soul out into the world.
People hadn't understood him at home. Not when he spoke, not when he played.
But one day, he was so sad, he didn't know what to do. He took his horn and started blowing his pain out into the world. He didn't think that anyone could hear him. After all, the freeway noises from the bridge above droned on all day.
He had closed his eyes and was surprised when the sound of another horn started mingling with what he had to say.
Suddenly, he didn't feel so sad anymore and allowed himself to be carried away by the conversation unfolding through the music.
When he opened his eyes, the other player, an old man, nodded at him.
"You have it going on, son."
