A life worth living (Five minutes freewrite)

in #freewrite6 years ago (edited)

Everything made sense at the end of the day. No matter how long the hours or how strenuous the job of keeping track of everything and meeting the deadlines - at the end of the day there was this overwhelming feeling of it all being worth it. As they filed to the underground garage, anxious to go home, the employees exchange smiles and pleasantries with the all the righteousness of people who view themselves as useful, even irreplaceable members of society. Quietly waiting for the company cars, dubbed the public limos, to take them home.
Since his promotion, Albert lived for this moment, this well-earned perk - the heavenly feeling of settling down in the robust chairs, adjusting the headsets that filled their ears with soft, soothing music, watching the picturesque scenery go by. He'd done well for himself and now the company took good care of his well-being. The first few nights on the job, he was the only one to keep his eyes open on the short trip home, taking in the view - the large boulevard dotted with shimmering yellow lights and the inviting neon signs of the shops in his new neighborhood. Now that he'd got used to it, he closed his eyes as soon as the car got in motion, letting the soft music do its job - better to get some rest before he got home where his lovely wife would be waiting, if she wasn't caught up at work by any chance. Not to worry though, they were well stocked in excellent meals, just waiting to be popped in the microwave. She'll probably be late, he remembered now, something with supplies she needed to sort out at the office. Oh, well, in all truth, he sometimes preferred to be alone and enjoy his evening program without having to pause the system when she got up to grab a snack and tapped him on the shoulder to ask if he wanted anything. Women! God knows what they found entertaining in all those gossip programs and that sappy music. Luckily they could afford two entertainment systems so he could watch a game undisturbed. Well deserved after a good day's work. 'I wonder how people lived before, when they didn't have all this?'
The limo stops from time to time, the driver calling out the names of those who have arrived at their destination. That Finley guy from 3rd floor just got off, he's next then.

Albert walks hurriedly to his door to escape the cold night and places his thumb on the scanner that will open the door. He's always nervous when the hobo's around, the guy sleeping in the dirty camouflage tent gives him the creeps. How can people live like this these days?

The hobo shakes his head every time he sees the drab buses with the painted windows bringing people back from work. All of them are just like this skinny dude from across the road, walking around with that content air and the idiotic smiles on their faces as if they're getting off a bloody limousine. What's so fucking funny he'd like to ask, but he knows better than that, he wouldn't want to get in trouble with the police and be sent to work for the company.
'Must be something in the water', he thinks as he takes a swig of his precious moonshine. 'Must be something in the water.'

We Happy Few, anyone?
The idea of attitude manipulation is always an interesting one in fiction. It brings up questions of the morality of it; if you can make people enjoy a less than perfect life, but it requires erasing a bit of what would be considered free will... should you do it? Or is a bit of sadness worth that extra bit of comprehending the reality around you? It's a harder question to answer than one might think.

you won a 100% upvote - which is sadly nothing like your curie votes LOL

A curie vote is so sweet, but, as I once read on a curie post, you cannot rely on it forever. It's community that matters and I feel I need to work more for the community, but I find myself always out of time. Thanks a lot for the upvote, much appreciated!

totally understand the running out of time. Happens to me all the time :(
