The girl in white (Five minutes freewrite)

in #freewrite6 years ago (edited)

She was not like the other girls, the ones displaying their young beautiful bodies with the typical shamelessness of their age. It was their time to shine in the Sun. For all the long walks on the beach, she seemed to fear the Sun, hiding under a wide parasol, her body wrapped in a flowing cotton dress. She ignored both the superior smiles of the other girls and the random catcalls of the few guys still able to take their eyes away from all the toned tanned skin on display.
On the contrary, skinny awkward Arthur did not dare to look at the almost naked pretty girls, he'd seen some of them laughing in his general direction. He took to following the girl in the white dress from a respectful distance, pausing from time to time to pick up a shell and study it with the utmost interest. But of course, she'd noticed him and started playing with him. At times, she'd stop and turn abruptly, making him scurry back to his chair. Other times, she' drag him far away to the little gulf, a desolated place with a beach full of stones and pebbles, where the ordinary tourists rarely set foot. She wasn't a tourist. He discovered that one evening when he followed her into the village and heard her talking in Spanish with a woman selling garish magnets and shell-boxes. 'Hasta manana, Maria', he heard the older woman say.
The girl in white had a name now. Maria, as simple and unpretentious as her.

One evening, Maria turned unexpectedly and beckoned him to come closer. It was more than a dream come true, it was a miracle. They were alone on the wild stretch of beach in the gulf and the girl taught him the strange language of love, which is not made of words, but looks and touch and kisses. And the poetry of love-making, for she was not as shy as she seemed. Arthur grew bold with the confidence of being loved, he didn't even look that skinny anymore.
Until the inevitable happened. Maria did not show up. Not at noon, not with the cool breeze of the dusk, not the next day. Arthur would wait faithfully on his chair, then he'd go down to the gulf, hoping she'd come by another route. He even went in search of the woman selling magnets, but when he asked 'Maria!?' she shook her head and motioned him to go away with a sad look on her face.
At the end of the week, Arthur went home to the his small rainy town, where no one spoke the strange language Maria had taught him. Or maybe there was some girl who knew the language only he never met her.
A new group of noisy tourists crowded the beach and a quiet boy named Edward, holidaying with his mother, caught sight of the girl in white. One day he took his book and told his mother he was going to read on the deserted strip of beach in the gulf, where it was quiet. And his wildest teenager dreams came true. The beautiful girl stopped in front of him and bent down to look at his book.
