Heard in on the Grapevine ✏️5 Minute Freewrite Day 257✏️ -- Grapevine
A “grapevine” can be positive or negative.
Of course I’m not talking about an actual grapevine. I wonder how many times the term “grapevine” is used outside of the fruit or wine industries to actually refer to a literal grapevine.
Growing up, grapevine referred to a line of communication. Like a children’s game of telephone where one child would tell another child a secret, then they would tell that secret to another child, and then they would tell that secret to another child, and so on. By the time one secret had made it through 10 different people, the details had completely changed.
The grapevine reminds me of how we receive information today. Even with the many communication tools we have, advanced technology – the world at our fingertips, and we still get things wrong just as if we were kids playing telephone.
A grapevine makes me think of dirty rumors that are spread and quickly get out of control, destroying people along the way.
I think that technology, at least, helps us clear up these false rumors much quicker than in the past, but it can also quicken the spread of them.
Poor grapevine. Why can’t it just be a grapevine and?

This was a nice write :) Grapevine makes me think of secrete meetings, but I agree, it often refers to something other than the fruit industry...
