The Quadrillion Pound Phone Bill (Freewrite Story)
Monday Prompt: Quadrillion provided by @mariannewest
“One Quadrillion Quid! How did that happen?”
For those not familiar with UK slang, a quid is a Great British Pound. I could show the US currency conversion, but Quadrillion is a big big number. It is also the total of someone's phone bill.
“Do we have the breakdown of the total?” asked Dad.
“It's all online now,” replied Mum.
“Let's fire up the laptop,” said Dad. “I hope whoever we rang, it was worth it.”
Dad went to the spare bedroom, which is now his study area. He connected the laptop to the mains and pressed the power button. Nothing.
“It's not working,” said Dad. “First a large phone bill, next, the laptop is broken. We can't even find out how the bill was so high “
He needed a strategy for this crazy morning. Mum entered the room and provided a phone number for the phone company.
Dad rang the number. It rang for about 20 seconds before going to a message.
”All our operators are busy right now. Please hold for assistance. We may find what you're looking for online. The average waiting time is 56 minutes.”
Dad is getting annoyed now. Then he remembered something. You can also get the phone company by dialing 100. That call is free.
“Welcome to BT queries. If you have a phone bill for a Quadrillion pounds, please press 1.”
Dad presses 1.
“If you have a bill for a Quadrillion pounds, it could be that your son has been ringing naughty numbers. He is probably running out of the house right now. Your laptop will work again if you replace the fuse that your son took out”
Dad is silent.
”Please hold if you would like more explanation, otherwise, please have a nice day.”
