What is a "state"? (Freewrite)

in #freewrite6 years ago

Obviously, those daily freewrite prompts are not that easy for non-native english speakers like me. Often, I read the prompt, and I do not have any idea what to write. The first thing I do in such cases is going into a research state. The web is full of websites (like Merriam-Webster and the like) that want to tell you the meaning of certain words (often the prompt is in a one-word state, but on Saturday, there are also other states. Sometimes, they help me. More often not. Today, I decided to not go into the quitting state but trying to write the freewrite for today's prompt "state", nonetheless.

The word state has several meanings

There is, for example, the state of a bulb lighting, and the state of a bulb being off. Both states are contrary to each other. There are also other types of states, like the physical condition of elements (water is often in a liquid state, sometimes in a frozen state, but can also be in a gaseous state). As a conclusion, the word state is often used to describe the condition of something.

But the word "state" has also other meanings. One of them is representing the institutions that are handling actions for their inhabitants, like the police or other authorities. When we talk about other countries, we also often talk about "states", like the state of Italy, the state of Switzerland, and so on.

As I already wrote in the beginning, we can use the word state also to describe what we are doing (me going into the research state, remember?). We are going into different states throughout the day, some of them are the awake state, working state, eating state, driving state, sleeping state.

We can even declare our emotional or mental condition as a state. At the moment, I am in the thinking state, thinking about if I should even publish this post all about states or better put it into the deleted state. If you can read it, it is in the published state.

In the end, I hope all these states of the word "state" are taking you, dear reader, to the smiling state.
