A Noisy Misadventure - Freewrite Day 592 Entry & SBI Giveaway - Prompt: Ear Phones

in #freewrite5 years ago

The young man walked down the sidewalk, head bobbing and feet dancing in time to the music. He could have been anywhere in the world, as oblivious as he was to his surroundings.

He has in ear phones, earbuds that could handle almost every function a phone could. It was entirely voice commanded, could take pictures, call people, place music, etc, etc. He had been working on these for nearly a year now, and this latest iteration was working perfectly, with one minor flaw.

See, the ear phone was designed to allow pertinent environmental sounds in through the noise it made, for certain sounds. Someone talking to you? You can tune that out if you want. A car honking and people yelling? That sounds always cuts though, as a safety feature. These ear phones were designed to be worn continuously, so this system was one of the first setup, and had been working beautifully.

Up until now.

The oblivious and happy inventor, confident that his invention would work as he had built it to, walked over one side of a tram railway. His song got to a particularly awesome guitar solo, and he paused to briefly strum some notes on his world famous air guitar.

He took another step, planting his foot on the edge of the track, slipping and twisting his ankle. He fell to the ground, the pain instant and intense. As he sat there on the ground, cradling his injured ankle, he did not see the tram approaching. He should have heard, the metal rumbling, the squeal of tires, but the ear phones kept blaring their music. The tram operator saw him, slamming on the brakes and blaring the horn, but it was too late, there was no way they could stop in time.

.

.

.

Luckily, someone walking nearby saw what was happening, threw caution to the wind, and sprinted towards the injured inventor. With a diving tackle, the two got out of the way of the tram just in time. The ear phones flew out of his ears with the tackle, becoming expensive dust under the wheels of the tram.

The inventor and his rescuer sat, breathing hard, happy to be alive. The inventor, never daunted, simply said, "Thank you. sigh. Looks like it's back to the drawing board for me."

Greetings my fellow Earth citizens :)

I'm not sure what got me onto this particular story arc. A combination of ear pods from apple, distracted phone usage, and bleeding edge innovation. Apparently, in New York, they're considering making it a fine-able offense to text and walk. Weird times we live in.

I wonder what cell phones will be replaced by. Probably brain implants someday, but likely augmented reality glasses, like Google Glass, will eventually catch on and replace phones. Though, they lack a textual interface and I don't see texting going by the wayside anytime soon. So maybe it'll be cell phones right up until brain implants. The future of tech is always interesting to consider.

I’ve found a really easy way to get pictures for some of the more obscure topics that I write about. Instead of going to Unsplash or Pixabay, I just search on Wikipedia, and use the picture there. So far, every one that I have seen is CC of some variety, so it works out awesomely. I highly recommend it.

I am having my FreeWrite’s be an SBI giveaway. This is a way to reward my fellow FreeWriter’s, and hopefully motivate me to do daily freewrite’s again. No promises on that, but I am going to make an attempt.

What you need to do to enter is simply comment on this post with a link to your freewrite. I will then assign you a number, and when I write the next post, I will pick using a random number generator. There’s no need to resteem or upvote, though it would be helpful to allow me to do this contest for longer.

I am also hosting another contest if you would like to enter that as well. Everyone is welcome :)

Looking Back/ Looking Forward SBI Contest

Until next time,

Aloha

I had no entries to my previous freewrite giveaway, so there are no winners. Sad day for me. I’m going to tag my previous entrants, so if you want to enter again I hope that you do.

This is my response to the Freewrite prompt, a daily writing exercise that I am really enjoying doing. Thank you @mariannewest for hosting these.

I'm in, my friend :)

You have all the reasons I do not use these. I am oblivious enough!

Thank you for entering :) you are entry #1.

If you win, which account would you like the SBI to go to?

This one is fine! TY for asking. I have 3 and soon 4 if I get my act together :)

Wow. That is quite impressive. What do you use to generate new accounts? I saw on SteemWorld you can do it for 3 Steem, but I have no context for how much that compares to other services.

Lots of people give them away free here. I can let know know next time i see an opportunity. I have 3 I have not even used yet. Soon I will get one of them going - only for minnow tips so I can get that all off of my other blogs.

Oh dang. Hmm. I don't really know what the benefit to having a new account would be. I guess I could set family members up with them. I don't have specific enough topics to warrant that. Well, I guess I probably could if I tried haha.

Does it really help that much financially?

Yes, it does help financially, since I use different dapps for each blog and end up with 40 or so posts per week in my niches. I could not do all this on one blog.

It's a ton of work, but this is what I do these days when I m not sleeping, eating, or working out lol.

Oh nice. That makes sense, they do all seem to provide different rewards. I'm glad you can maximize on them.

Have you looked into SteemPress? Apparently it gives really good rewards.

I saw that blogging is how you get all your income, I can't imagine that is easy, but congratulations :)

Oh no!!

This happened to me too, and it was why I stopped hosting short story contests:

I had no entries to my previous freewrite giveaway, so there are no winners. Sad day for me.

But, but, I will check out your contests, and if there is no daunting word limit - like @jayna's 250 max for Monday freewrite contests - I'll take a stab at it. Or @Felt.Buzz with the 240 character thing. Or the 50-word thing. Really, I should try these. I know. I know.

I love your story

especially for thwarting my expectation of disaster and death. Cool twist at the end!! Reminds me of that literary term deux et machina except that it is plausible, as opposed to some unbelievable intervention from a god in the sky. Thank you for the happy ending!
Off to see what your contest involves, and to resteem and promote!

Well, my other contest has some entries, it was just my previous freewrite contest that did not.

I'm glad you enjoyed the story and the better ending. As I was writing, I felt it going bad and paused to think for awhile because I wanted a happy ending :)

Disney endings are so maligned, and rightly so, and yet, yet, I want 'em!
Bring on the happy endings!
I need to get better at watching for contest announcements. Yes, one place to start is in a Discord channel. I gave up Discord....

Haha I don't know if it's rightly so. Happy endings do have to happen some of the time. But yeah, I definitely don't like my media to have sad endings, unless they're really thematically appropriate.

Eh, I promote to a few channels, but I'm not super concerned. It's just a nice way to give back.

Why did you give up on Discord?

You had me going there for a second, thinking that the inventor was going to become crushed bones. I can't imagine permanent ear phones.

Resident cat here, giving you a carnation and today's new prompt.

Haha, that was the goal, I'm glad it had the intended effect. The way I meant for it to be was not permanent, just that you'd have them in instead of carrying your phone on you. So they'd be on the majority of the time.

Thank you for sharing the link with me :)

You got a 1.69% upvote from @ocdb courtesy of @nmcdougal94! :)

Sorry to see you got no entries for this round! I have been suffering from a terrible chest cold and my head is so stuffed up...I can't even think straight. When fully back into the swing of things...I look forward to participating in your contest again. Even just to support your efforts. Have you tried adding a link to the contest channel on SBI discord? You could get featured in one of their contest posts and attract some additional entries. <3

Haha it's not too big of a deal, I think part of it is that I don't respond soon enough to the prompt post so people don't see it.

I'm so sorry to head that you're sick :( I hope you have a speedy recovery.

I look forward to seeing your posts in future contest :) you write excellently, it's a pleasure to read.

I have been sharing them on multiple different discord channels. I'm on contest kings, and get promoted there when I do these.
